Complex but great book on the how the science of management has developed

This book was required for my management class, and the book was complex, but it really helped explain the different aspects of management with their full series of essays. Great book explaining how management practice has grown and changed over the years via a series of essays. Great book.

Great advice for people wanting to get into farming

Mr. Whatley's book contains excellent, practical advice for starting a small-scale farm while stacking the odds in your favor. He correctly advocates that the future of farming isn't in the government, Del Monte (et al) or thousand-acre megafarms but in small operations providing specialized crops & meat to selective clientele. Though somewhat dated in pricing, the advice is still valid fourteen years after printing. Once I get mine up & running, I let you know more.

After reading Mr. Whatley's book, I want to give up what I'm doing and starting up a clientele membership club farm. If more farmers would diversify in Whatley's style, I believe the state of America's farm community would be much better. Good practical advice, if a bit outdated, from all aspects of starting, running and capitalizing on a farm business

Provides Food For Thought

If you are looking to this one book alone to be your answer on how to leave the corporate grind and make a prosperous living in the country, you will be disappointed. If you are the type who read a lot and glean a little bit here and there - then this book is worth the read as it's full of a number of different ideas.

Booker presents this thesis that the future of farming is not with "get big or get out", but instead "stay small, get focused, go direct to the customer". His main theme is the creation of a "members only" farm co-op, where the people come to you (transportation), they pick the produce (labor, sorting, grading), and pay at check out (pricing). It's pick-your-own, but a members-only pick-your-own with an annual fee.

Once Booker lays out his thesis and support of why it would work, the rest of the book are stories from other farmers who are using similar methods that fit to support Booker's idea. While it's impossible for one farm to be all of these at the same time, there are a number of ideas presented here to at least get the brain thinking creatively with regards to farming and business that is different than simply large scale mono cropping and the assumed debt.

when you can't get enough

If you haven't read Clovenhoof and Pigeonwings then do yourself a favor and check them out. Lots of laugh out loud moments and a deep thought or two... This collection of shorts really comes between the two novels and explains a few things. But mainly it's worth reading for the good laughs. Goody and Grant have made the Lord of the Underworld into an almost sympathetic character as he confronts the mortal world with just Lambrini, a sense of humor and two friends who are up for almost anything. Best of all, it's not preaching to you, just offering many laughs at this thing we call life.

I love this whole series! I rarely laugh-out-loud while reading because I am often up with my Kindle while my husband sleeps beside me. I don't know how he slept through my bouts of giggling as I read this and the other books in the series!

The Devil has all the chuckles

Last year I bumped into the authors at Edge Lit 4 where they had a table and were selling/promoting their books. It only took me a moment to realise I was going to like these books.......and I was right.

The first book in the series, Clovenhoof, introduced us to Jeremy Clovenhoof (aka Satan) who is now living in the suburbs of Birmingham. He rapidly became one of my favourite comedy characters - it's like sit-com gold, if there is trouble and mischief you can bet that Clovenhoof and his neighbours Ben and Nerys are going to be slap bang in the middle of it all.

Which brings us to Satan's Shorts, a collection of (as you might have guessed) short stories, five of which feature Clovenhoof and friends. His exploits involve going to night school ,dressing up as David Hasselhoff (for wedding entertainment) and his attempts to cure Ben of Arachnophobia. As you would expect, things never go quite to plan.

Add to this tales of Saint Christopher, who has now been demoted from the Sainthood and is now working for the Non Specific Prayer Assessment Unit (a kind of heavenly call centre) and various denizens of Heaven and Hell and what you have here is a chucklesome collection that will have you laughing and cringing in equal measure.

which is nice, but they do not give as much of ...

This is a book written for a UK market. It presents a wide variety of HR theories and practices, but it is limited in how well it actually explains the concepts. It seems to jump around a lot and does not give clear definitions of a lot of terms. It spends a lot of time on sustainable practices, which is nice, but they do not give as much of a drill down in other areas; especially labor issues.

Beware: Cover is Misleading; Kindle Edition is Not the Newer Second Edition

The Kindle version is NOT the second (latest, 2014) edition even though the image shown on the Amazon page for the Kindle edition is of the cover for the newer, second edition. The Kindle version content is from the older, 2004, first edition. I have the paperback version of the 2014 second edition and thought I'd get the Kindle version for convenience of reading on my Android when away from home or on my PC even when home at my desk. I've compared them -- they are NOT the same. Either the photo should be changed or this should be clearly stated -- preferably both since the two covers are only a little different.

Good book, bad Kindle formatting, small and low-res images

I'll get straight to the point: the book is fine and I learned a lot from it, but the formatting on the Kindle version is awful. There are lots of pages with only one or two small pictures in them. Sometimes, these poorly diagramed pages go on for 5-7 pages in a roll and having to refer back to the text describing them gets very tedious (back-back-back…, next-next-next…).

Photography is a hobby to me and I read photography related books to improve my technique. I started out buying the print versions of some of the more popular books and I was happy with that approach until I realized the added convenience of owning their electronic versions instead (I'd get both versions if only publishers would bundle them at a discount). For instance, I could more comfortably read in bed, easily create and share bookmarks, and have a lightweight portable library on multiple devices, including Amazon's online reader. If you're an e-book convert already, you know exactly what I mean.

When I purchased this e-book, I did not have its corresponding print copy for comparison. But it didn't take long before I noticed that there was something very wrong with it. While I was enjoying the book's contents, I was constantly getting annoyed by the book's diagraming and the lack of resolution in the pictures. Any time I'd zoom into one of the small pictures (and there are tons of them), I'd be looking at such a pixelated image that I'd immediately be forced to zoom out and just examine the small version instead. This made it unnecessarily difficult to follow the illustrated examples of lighting techniques presented by the author throughout the book. Then there were the multiple strings of pages with 1-2 small pictures in them which I mentioned earlier. Very frustrating.

The only reason why I'm giving the Kindle version of this book 2 stars is so I don't lower its overall star rating too much. It is a very good book, as confirmed by other reviewers. However, until Amazon allows for reviewing the Kindle version of its books separately, this is the only outlet I have for my complaint that might make any difference. So do yourself a favor and think twice before getting the e-version of this book and don't hesitate to ask Amazon for a refund if, like me, you end up feeling like you made a bad investment.

About the Author
Robert Beatty lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and three daughters who help create and refine his stories. He loves to explore the grand Biltmore Estate and the darkened forest trails where his novels take place. Mr. Beatty's Disney-Hyperion novel "Serafina and the Black Cloak" became a New York Times Bestseller the first week it was launched and remain on the list for 20 weeks. He writes full-time now, but in his past lives, he was one of the early pioneers of cloud computing, the founder/CEO of Plex Systems, the co-founder of Beatty Robotics, and the chairman/CTO of Narrative Magazine. In 2007, he was named an Entrepreneur of the Year. When asked about the inspiration for his book, Robert said, "Serafina's journey grew out of my desire to write a story about an unusual and heroic young girl for my three daughters."

Robert Beatty does it again!

I found this series last November, my family and I were planning a trip to Biltmore and Serafina and the Black Cloak came up in a search I did looking for books about Biltmore. I read the book straight through in one evening because I could not put it down! The writing/storytelling style took me back to my childhood, when my dad would tell me bedtime stories. Not only was the story thoroughly enjoyable I loved the insight that it gave into the house, reading the book and then touring the house made the story come alive even more. I applied for the SART (Serafina Advanced Reading Team) and was blessed with an advanced copy of the sequel. It's sequel, Serafina and the Twisted Staff took me on a magical journey back to Asheville, NC with characters that I love and a surprise twist that I never saw coming. In Black Cloak, Serafina discovered the mystery of who she was but as you'll read in Twisted Staff, she wasn't quite finished coming into her own. This book combines self-discovery with the power of friendship and the important life lesson of facing your problems and not running away from them. In Twisted Staff Serafina makes new friends, and enemies; meets with disaster and triumphs in the end; finds her own power, and recognizes the power of her friends. Robert Beatty is an absolute master of his craft combining fantasy with reality and fact with fiction. There's never a dull moment, and I truly felt that I was right there in the story and not just a subtle observer.

PAGE TURNER!

I had the opportunity to be a part of an "advanced reader" group and cannot say enough good things about this book! I was so excited to get to continue the story of Serafina, which I was completely taken in by in "Black Cloak". This book DEFINITELY does not disappoint. It is a total page turner! I realize this is a young readers book and I am a 30-something, but I really feel like it has no age limit. It's entertaining and highly suspenseful. The continuation of Serafina's personal story along with a new adventure were excellent reading. Robert Beatty has done a great job in continuing this saga and I CANNOT WAIT for the 3rd installment. If you liked the first one, I would be HIGHLY surprised if you did not LOVE this one. Serafina has really grown and started to come into her own.

IT COSTS ME twice as much to read Serafina and the Twisted Staff. I purchase one copy for myself, and one copy for my Goddaughter (who is also my niece). But, ssh. She doesn’t know yet, unless she’s reading this. In which case…SURPRISE, BABY GIRL!
