Appalling number of errors here . . .

Looking forward to improving my skills in the Croatian language, I was appalled by the large number of glaring errors contained in this guide. There are dozens of mistakes, some truly unbelievable. For instance, the author doesn't seem to know how to conjugate the future tense. You may say "Ja cu citati" or you may say "Ja budem citala" but you certainly would never ever say "Ja budem citati", as he teaches! There are several glaring errors of this nature, and very, very many others not quite so serious, such as inaccurate translations i.e. questions translated as statements; word for word translations from idiomatic English, (making the phrase meaningless in Croatian); outdated vocabulary; and lots of typos. I am sure Mr. Susnjar knows better, perhaps his editing and proofing staff let him down. The organization of the book was good, as is the great number of phrases, if only one could be sure they were actually correct. Learning from this book does increase one's knowledge of the language, but who needs help learning to speak in a kinda-sorta mixed up Croatian. (Too many of us are already really good at that!) Hopefully a corrected edition will soon be forthcoming. Mr. Susnjar, fix up this book, and I will purchase it again - just teach us correctly next time.

I bought this as my first dictionary as I was learning the language. When I actually got to Croatia, I showed it to the native speakers (college students), and they pointed out more than 20 mistakes in as many pages.
Other than that, I did find that the grammer portion (in the front) was helpful, and I do still refer to that quite often.
Use this book as a rudimentary reference. For a more comprehensive dictionary to English, I suggest Langenschiedt's.

At this point, if Kory M Shrum writes something, I'm gonna read it!

Full Disclosure: I received an early copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't even know how to start my review because a lot of what I want to talk about would spoil the book! Maybe I should just stick to the fact that DYING FOR A LIVING was a brilliant book and this is a fantastic follow up? :D

DYING BY THE HOUR picks up after the events in DYING FOR A LIVING. Jesse chose Lane for her relationship, causing Ally, her BFF and sometimes lover, to close out and back off. But Lane is harboring resentment because Jesse chose Ally in that basement. Sure, Lane has NRD now, but Jesse didn't know that at the time and it burns at him. So while she has to deal with nefarious plans from her father, a boss who is pretending to be dead, and the joys and woes of being a Replacement Agent, Jesse has lost her BFF and gained a BF who is prickly with hurt feelings.

The writing is just as good as the first book: it's well told, well built, and flows nicely. I normally don't like narratives that switch points of view because it can get confusing, but Kory M Shrum does it right and it flows naturally.

Shrum also knows how to make those characters believable. I was highly annoyed with Lane, wanting to punch him at one point, annoyed with Jesse, sympathizing with Ally, and wondering what the heck is all of this coming to. I think good writers are the ones that evoke emotion, even if it's simple loathing for a character and Kory Shrum is one of those writers. You end up caring for her characters and wondering what is going to happen to them around the corner.

Jesse Sullivan is back in 'Dying by the Hour' and that's a very good thing

Jesse Sullivan gets paid to die.
So far, she's done that more than 80 times.
But there are people out in the world who would like to make her next death permanent.
In "Dying for a Living" author Kory Shrum introduced us to Jesse who, because of a quirk in her genetic makeup, can - literally - come back from the dead. She's one of a handful of people - roughly 2 percent of the population - that can do this and for several years she was a federal death replacement agent. In effect, she got paid to die so that others might live.
Then something went wrong. Around the country other men and women like her were being murdered in such a way that they were not able to return to the living.
Thousands of them, in fact.
And Jesse, trapped by religious fanatics and a high-class escort whose daughter had been kidnapped, was next on the list.
She escaped but she knows that she is not safe.
Might never be safe, in fact, unless the killers are caught.
In "Dying by the Hour" Shrum continues Jesse's story and it is every bit as good as the first installment in the diminutive heroine's saga.
In fact, it may even be better.
In "Dying for a Living" Jesse is in love with two people: Lane, a hunky guy with a streak of bad boy in him, and Ally, her childhood girlfriend who now works as her assistant. She's going to have to choose one over the other at some point and in "Dying by the Hour" she has made that choice. This gives Shrum an opportunity to delve deeply into the emotional lives of both Jesse and Ally and she does it with a deft touch. What could have been a sappy romance is, in Shrum's hands, a story of the sacrifices you make for those you love and the price you pay for making those sacrifices.
"Dying by the Hour" is not just a story about lovers and sacrifice, however.
Far from it: This is a crackling good adventure story complete with gunfights, kidnappings, hand-to-hand combat and enough psychotic characters to fill the average asylum. If you like action, you'll certainly find it in "Dying by the Hour."
Shrum is an excellent storyteller with a firm command of the language and a strong narrative sense. Her characters are finely drawn and her plotting is seamless. She sets a scene without a lot of superfluous description and, as a result, puts the reader in the moment without slowing down the narrative with useless details.
And, just as she did in her first novel, Shrum ends this book leaving her readers wondering what happens next.
Personally, I can't wait to find out.

Dying for the Next One

Some of the other reviewers have posted a fabulous plot synopsis, so I'm going to focus on the elements that made me fall in love with this series all over again.

I read a ton of urban fantasy, and keeping a series interesting and engaging, while fresh and new, is nearly impossible. Shrum pulls it off, though, and I'm dying for the third book in this series. She splits the book between Jesse and Ally's POV while remaining in first person, and clearly marks who's chapter it is, but there was never a doubt as to who was speaking. Each character's voice is distinctly different, not just in tone and phrasing, but their worldview and who they are. I really enjoyed the peek into Ally's head and I hope Shrum continues this trend. Shrum makes the best use of having multiple views by showing us the girls keeping secrets from each other, and giving them their own inner demons to fight.

I was also impressed with Shrum's ability to cut right to the quick as well. She doesn't shy away from the hard to handle subjects about how far is too far, and the moral consequences of your actions, but the book never felt preachy. The difficult situations the characters faced felt more real because of how the characters struggled and handled them. It really made them come alive.

I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Shrum has expanded her original concept in DYING FOR A LIVING in this next installment, but there's so much more for us to explore.

About the Author

R A Duff is a tenured professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, and professor emeritus in the Department of Philosophy, University of Stirling, Scotland.
His research focuses on the philosophy of criminal law, and he has published widely on penal theory, including; Philosophical Foundations of the Criminal Law (co-edited with Stuart Green, OUP 2011); Trials and Punishments (CUP, 1986), and Punishment, Communication, and Community (OUP, 2001); on the structure and principles of criminal liability with titles including Intention, Agency, and Criminal Liability (Blackwell, 1990), Criminal Attempts (OUP, 1996), and Answering for Crime (Hart, 2007); and on the criminal trial. His current projects include a book for the Criminalization project The Realm of the Criminal Law.

Lindsay Farmer works on the relationship between criminal law, legal theory and legal history, looking at how historical changes in the institutions and practices of the criminal law do and should shape normative accounts of criminal law. His book Criminal Law, Tradition and Legal Order (CUP, 1997) examines the development of Scots criminal law and its relation to national identity. He is currently working on a historical account of theories of criminalization. He has been professor of law at the University of Glasgow since 1999.

S.E. Marshall is a professor of philosophy at the University of Stirling. She co-edited the three-volume project The Trial on Trial with R.A. Duff, L. Farmer, and V. Tadros (Hart 2007) as well as the three titles of the Criminalization series. She serves on the Management Committee of the Philosophical Quarterly, and is President of the UK Association for Legal and Social Philosophy.

Massimo Renzo works primarily in legal theory and political philosophy. His main research interests are in the philosophical foundation of criminal law, international justice, state legitimacy, and political obligation. He is a lecturer at York Law School, and is on the editorial board of Criminal Law and Philosophy.

Victor Tadros works primarily on the philosophy of criminal law, criminal justice and punishment. He also has interests in general jurisprudence, and moral and political philosophy. He has two published books Criminal Responsibility (OUP, 2005) and The Ends of Harm (OUP, 2011), and he is also writing a book for the Criminalization series entitled Wrongs and Crimes. Prior to his appointment as professor of criminal law and legal theory at the University of Warwick, he held posts at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh.

Some things in her memoir were missing...

I have had a fascination with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor for many years. When I received the book, and started reading it, and realized that some things were decidedly missing (and I don't mean pages missing...recollections were definitely missing). I know that after Wallis left her first husband, she followed him to China, to try to repair their marriage. That didn't work, and she spent quite a bit of time in China, staying with friends, and making new "friends". Wallis conveniently "forgot" that entire period of time, as she conveniently didn't mention any of it in her memoirs. There are more things missing as well. I realize that she wanted to "clean up her act" especially when she was then married to the Duke, but it seemed rather ingenious to delete many parts of her life that way too many people knew already.

A Nice Little Bio

I was able to determine that Wallis Simpson is not the villainous that other history books make her out to be. I found in her memoir that she was just a simple American woman who happened to become the wife of the most sought after bachelor in the world.

Through this memoir, which is well written for a woman who had never wrote anything gives me the other side of the story, and the inner intimate story that perhaps showed the truth of the scandal. I've never read anything on this subject before and it certainly gave me all the details I needed to know. I will read more on the subject in the future, but nothing that will have the inside story as Wallis Simpson itself. Very informative.

Haven't finished it yet -- have really been enjoying it and wonder if the Duchess had
a ghost writer? Frankly, surprised as it was published so long ago and wasn't sure how
much I would be interested -- very pleasantly surprised and fascinated by her version
of "the story"!

In a vacant lot near her Cleveland home, she scratches six holes in the dirt and plants six seeds, hoping to attract her father's spirit. She definitely catches the eye of Ana, an elderly white woman who has watched the ethnic makeup of the neighborhood change. Ana assumes Kim is burying treasure, but when she realizes her mistake, she makes it her mission to ensure that the girl's plants are watered. The perspective changes with each chapter--Kim narrates first, then Ana, then Wendell, who is sent by Ana to water "the Chinese girl's" plants and decides to do some planting of his own. Others follow: Gonzalo's grandfather sees the garden as an opportunity to be productive without being humiliated because of his inability to learn English; black body builder Curtis uses his tomatoes to help him rebuild his romance with Lateesha. Neighbor by neighbor, the garden grows, with the once-vacant lot eventually becoming a varied and vibrant community of its own. Each voice is distinct. Each character springs to life, complete with attitudes, prejudices, and opinions, and as the viewpoints shift, Fleischman shows how the different members of a multi-ethnic urban neighborhood overcome the barriers of language and background to enrich one another and forge new connections. The characters' vitality and the sharply delineated details of the neighborhood make this not merely an exercise in craftsmanship or morality but an engaging, entertaining novel as well. No one in the neighborhood thought that a vacant lot that looks like a complete dump could have potential. Then one day a girl plants some beans and they take off. As people watch her, they follow her lead. They also plant seeds on the lot. Soon, there are all sorts of plants being grown. People get together, help each other out, and share their crops, while others are territorial with the plot they call their own. The story is told through multiple points of view of children, teenagers, and adults from all walks of life.

My grandparents, and my parents, read Aesop's Fables to us, and many many other easy-to-grasp Good Example Tales. THIS book, set in a slum of exhausted people, working doggedly just to survive, provides a new setting for a familiar Universal Truth: Everything you do COUNTS, one way or another. It is short, pocket-sized, simple, and CLEAR: EVERYTHING each of us does, ANYTHING we do, will be seen, and may even be copied. The little girl who clears away a tiny piece of a slum-dump-yard and PLANTS FIVE LIMA BEANS is the original angel for a slowly emerging neighborhood garden. Each little space is silently claimed by an individual who has seen hers, taken note, found some inner Hope, done the Work, and Seized the Day. Each paltry plot is personal, the fruit of Quiet but Persistent Attention - and a HUGE PERSONAL VICTORY over despair. I am giving a copy to each of our extended-family Families for my own 79th Birthday, in remembrance of our shared forebears, and in confidence for our individual lives. A really good book for teachers and new readers

First off, this is an interesting, touching story about a working class community neighborhood coming together and creating a garden for themselves , building a stronger community in the process. If you're just a reader or an adult buying this for a child, that's reason enough to check out this book:)

If you're a teacher, though, this book is especially helpful.I have taught this book in my adult ESL classes two or three times now. It's a really great book for diverse classrooms, as it represents a lot of different cultures (Black, Guatemalan, Korean, Mexican,Vietnamese etc). "Seedfolks"' organization makes it ideal for new readers , also, since each chapter is only a few pages long, but still gives a great portrait of each character. Teachers can incorporate lots of fun outdoor activities with this as well, or just grow seeds indoors, if you are teaching more than one subject and want to tie in science or social studies.

Pretty good, but not great!

This book gives some interesting perspective on the contrasts betwewn the Levital priesthood and the Melchizadecian priesthood. Although that was very interesting, I guess I was hoping for some earthshaking new information. For the price it is a worthy read.

Mere Melchizedek

This is a short and not particularly mysterious exegetic 101 about Melchizedek and the epistle to the Hebrews. It doesn't say anything new or out of the ordinary, except (perhaps) when author Chuck Missler indicates that the period when Israel was God's chosen people is a “Jewish parenthesis”, something I suppose classical dispensationalists would not say. However, he doesn't elaborate. Nor does the article mention any new discoveries in Jerusalem, as the editorial review claims. Something of a disappointment, actually. I had expected something more along the lines of, say, Michael Heiser or even Margaret Barker!
