Anarchist's Guide to Historic House Museums, by Franklin D Vagnone, Deborah E Ryan

In these days of an aging traditional audience, shrinking attendance, tightened budgets, increased competition, and exponential growth in new types of communication methods, America’s house museums need to take bold steps and expand their overall purpose beyond those of the traditional museum. They need not only to engage the communities surrounding them, but also to collaborate with visitors on the type and quality of experience they provide. This book is a groundbreaking manifesto that calls for the establishment of a more inclusive, visitor-centered paradigm based on the shared experience of human habitation. It draws inspiration from film, theater, public art, and urban design to transform historic house museums while providing a how-to guide for making historic house museums sustainable, through five primary themes: communicating with the surrounding community, engaging the community, re-imagining the visitor experience, celebrating the detritus of human habitation, and acknowledging the illusion of the shelter’s authenticity. Anarchist's Guide to Historic House Museums offers a wry, but informed, rule-breaking perspective from authors with years of experience and gives numerous vivid examples of both good and not-so-good practices from house museums in the U.S.

Review

"The tone of the book is blunt, but I think that is necessary. The whole historic-preservation industry is so deeply rooted in either a 'Jackie Kennedy' faux-gentility or a dead-white-men's 'this is how history is done, boys!' approach to everything."― Ulysses Dietz, Chief Curator and Curator of Decorative Arts, The Newark Museum

"I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is written in accessible language, making complex matters very approachable. The authors have also provided a lot of concrete examples, so there is little guessing at what they are trying to say. Virtually anyone in the cultural world could take this book and find elements that are relevant to his or her work."― Lisa Ackerman, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, World Monuments Fund

"If you are a traditionalist, you might think that Vagnone and Ryan are heretics, blasphemers or, at the very least, bomb throwers. You may be right. Many of the ideas in this book go against the standard rules of museum practice. But this is, for many historic house museums, a time of crisis, and crises require bold action and creative thinking. The Anarchist s Guide encourages us to think differently, to challenge conventional procedures, to put visitors first, to take risks."― From the Foreword by Gretchen Sullivan Sorin, The Cooperstown Graduate Program

"A book that is precisely what the doctor ordered for a patient on life support .It is not overstating the situation to opine that Vagnone and Ryan, in the "Anarchist s Guide," have launched an important campaign for change that might well determine the future of the past by starting a discussion that is long overdue."― Taylor Stoermer, The History Doctor

"The Anarchist's Guide is a timely reminder to think long and hard about what and who museums are for, and about what expertise this requires. Connoisseurship alone does not a great museum make. It is the careful balance of objects, buildings, and people that brings it to life." ― Katy Barrett, Royal Museums Greenwich, Apollo Magazine

Mega Thought Provoking
By Carl E. Johnson Jr.
Let me be clear (where have we heard that before?). I am neither an academic nor a museum professional and only came across this book by accident. However, as a layman I'm very much interested in museums in general, including historic houses and communities, of which my wife and I have visited many and worked for both as a professional (my wife, as a history museum exhibit and program director) and volunteer (myself, as an art museum docent).

Let's also be clear that the Guide is not a comprehensive "how-to" on running historic houses. Most notably it does not deal with financial issues or with mission concepts, at least not directly. Rather, focus is on the "visitor experience" and how to draw audiences to historic houses. If I had to pick one phrase to describe what the authors think of most historic house operations today, it would be "too anal" (as borrowed from Freud).

The heart of this small book is 132 pages of practical thinking and examples of how to make historic houses more attractive and welcoming to visitors, both by reaching out to the communities in which they live, and by providing memorable experiences to their clients (visitors). Those pages are book-ended by sections that formalize the authors' approach, yet overall the writing and ideas are readily accessible to those outside the academy, for whom the book has obviously been written. The authors point out that historic houses are seeing declining visitor numbers, and their purpose is to help these institutions reverse that trend. They also admit that while some of their ideas are research-based, others are mere conjecture, and they invite the museum community to contribute to their ongoing "anarchist" project.

Although the "anarchist" tag is catchy, I'd say Ryan and Vagnone are radical rather than "anarchic." I hate to use this phrase because it's become a cliche, but what they are really asking house museum people to do is "think outside the box" (house). Ideas are divided into five categories: (1) reach out to, which means become involved with, the surrounding community; (2) focus on communications, understanding that communication with visitors is a two-way street (what your visitors tell you is just as important, if not more so, than what you tell them); (3) somewhat related to the number (2) as I see it, make the historic house a shared experience in which visitors are invited to participate in the house experience through their experiences; (4) take a holistic approach to the house and its objects/artifacts (and its history, implicitly); and (5) loosen up and take a practical, realistic approach to preservation and hard assets. I hope this is a fair summary.

Clearly (again) not all that the authors suggest is going to translate perfectly to every historic house -- some might think, "Whoa, we can't do that," and in some cases they'd likely be right. But, think hard about all this "stuff," that's the message I get. Finally, I'd add that many of the authors' suggestions, such as encouraging your tour guides or docents to go NUDE, are translatable to other kinds of museums. Now, if that doesn't make you want to read the book, I'm not sure what will.

Ignore This at Your Peril
By GForce
Most historic house museums are managed in ways that are socially and financially unsustainable. The best way to address this deepening crisis, Vagnone and Ryan contend, is by creatively engaging one’s neighbours on their own terms. Through their classes and workshops the authors have tracked visitor experience with amazing specificity by way of video mapping; movement and activity diagramming; Imagination, Excitement and Energy Graphs; Sound Mapping and Anarchist Tags.

The book is full of innovative techniques for visitor engagement, and includes a chart for evaluating the state of your museum in historic site in 32 categories.

Strongly recommended for all cultural institutions seeking innovative ways of fostering new audiences.

Finite and Infinite Games, by James Carse

“There are at least two kinds of games,” states James P. Carse as he begins this extraordinary book. “One could be called finite; the other infinite.”

Finite games are the familiar contests of everyday life; they are played in order to be won, which is when they end. But infinite games are more mysterious. Their object is not winning, but ensuring the continuation of play. The rules may change, the boundaries may change, even the participants may change—as long as the game is never allowed to come to an end.

What are infinite games? How do they affect the ways we play our finite games? What are we doing when we play—finitely or infinitely? And how can infinite games affect the ways in which we live our lives?

Carse explores these questions with stunning elegance, teasing out of his distinctions a universe of observation and insight, noting where and why and how we play, finitely and infinitely. He surveys our world—from the finite games of the playing field and playing board to the infinite games found in culture and religion—leaving all we think we know illuminated and transformed. Along the way, Carse finds new ways of understanding everything, from how an actress portrays a role to how we engage in sex, from the nature of evil to the nature of science. Finite games, he shows, may offer wealth and status, power and glory, but infinite games offer something far more subtle and far grander.

Carse has written a book rich in insight and aphorism. Already an international literary event, Finite and Infinite Games is certain to be argued about and celebrated for years to come. Reading it is the first step in learning to play the infinite game.

This little book can change the way you look at many things in your life...
By Cathy A Bennett
Questions about what constitutes the work of the infinite versus the finite have been contemplated by the lowliest and highest spiritual seekers throughout time. Such questioning is often serious or at the least solemn as a quest for right living, whether one is religious or not. But how many of us have viewed this questioning through the lens of systems thinking and cybernetics? Professor Emeritus of history and literature of religion at New York University did just that when he wrote Finite and Infinite Games.

Breaking new ground in the way we can think about the infinite versus the finite, Carse questions these two concepts in the form of games that we play in everyday life. His writing style reminds one of a physicist’s description of the components of complexity—all things and no things being possible at the same time. He flushes out the rules for playing infinite and finite games, demonstrating how everything in life is interrelated and interdependent, creating wholes greater than the sum of their parts, true to systems thinking. By using this perspective, Carse then goes deeper into each system, finite and infinite, showing how one must interact within it in order to be finite or infinite in one’s play, as a cyberneticist would. All of a sudden, one’s perception about the infinite and finite is transformed from typically a religious/spiritual viewpoint to one more humanistic and closer to daily experience.

Because Carse changes so drastically the language one generally finds in works discussing the finite and infinite, it is a little difficult to grasp the game images he creates, but sticking with the book is well worth the difficulty at the beginning. For instance, he starts out saying, “There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the game” (Carse, 2012, p.3). Once the rules for playing both finite and infinite games are laid out, Carse takes the reader through the various ways we tend to play these games through politics, religion, sexuality, the roles people choose, society, culture, and our relationship to nature, to name a few. One ends up with a completely new way of thinking about how to approach life. This deeply profound little book is a truly a game changer.

Rethink Everything
By Prometheus I
This book makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about love, nature, the universe, the meaning of life. I've given it to some friends and they don't seem to "get it", so it's not for everyone.

It starts with the intriguing concept that there are two types of games: finite games with the goal of ending the game with a victor and infinite games with the goal of keeping the game going forever and never ending.

This book is hard to explain. You just have to try it and see if you like it.

Life as a simple game with rules but full of meanings.
By Odysseus at home
This is a book hard to classify. I bought it because I read some fragments of it in Robert Fulghum's Words I Wish I Wrote: A Collection of Writing That Inspired My Ideas, where he quotes some of the aphorisms with what James P. Carse, the author, fills and charms the book.

As the title suggests, this is a work on finite and infinite games that purports "a vision of life as play and possibility." So if life is a game you should play it and if you play it you should follow the rules. Right, but what are the rules. Well, here enters Carse, who in seven chapters defines the game and unfolds and explains the rules.

The seven chapters are named in a very sportive (and even poetic) manner: There are at least to kind of games; No one can play a game alone; I am the genius of myself; A finite game occurs within a world; Nature is the realm of the unspeakable; We control nature for societal reasons; Myth provokes explanation but accepts none of it.

And there you are. As I said, the book is written in an aphoristic mode, as in Also sprach Zarathustra/Thus Spoke Zarathustra: German/English Bilingual Text (German Edition), but with much more sense than that Nietzsche's brick. "Finite and Infinite..." is not a wanton sum of sayings more or less wise. So please do not confound games with lightness or pastime. At least not in this book. So you have to keep in mind, as long as you read, that this is a book about life ("A vision of life..."), not about playing games as a part of your life.

Then, what are the rules? The rules are simple but full of derivatives or branches that have no limit. Like life itself that starts with a very simple origin and grows up in complexity and variety. That's why the first paragraph says that "There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite; the other infinite." As long as this rule begins to increase in complexity is very helpful to keep that definition in mind. Carse says that a game can be won, so the game ends, which is the finite case. Or the game is playing continuously because the purpose is not winning but to follow up the game, which is the infinite case.

Let's quote Carse: "Infinite players cannot say when their game began, nor do they care. They do not care for the reason that their game in not bounded by time. Indeed, the only purpose of the game is to prevent it from coming to an end, to keep everyone in play." Sounds mysterious? It is. We play infinite games as long as we live, and the finite games we play are there not only to compensate (or to maintain under control the anxiety and) our ignorance of who wins at last in the infinite version, but also to be prepared against, and to be educated for the surprises and twists that life put in front of us: "To be prepared against surprise is to be 'trained.' To be prepared for surprise is to be 'educated.'"

The probe of this work descends very deep. That's the reason why the last chapter is dedicated to the myth issue. For several years I've been studying the singularities of a myth, the purpose they have, why they appeared, why they are here with us in spite of the exponential growing of knowledge through science and the technological development associated with it. And Carse offers here one of the most astounding answers to my search, which is presented in the very title of the chapter: "Myth provokes explanations but accepts none of it." It is as if finite and infinite games collide in this final movement of the play, remembering us what the author told us at the beginning of the book: "Infinite players cannot say when their game began, nor do they care. They do not care for the reason that their game is not bounded by time. Indeed the only purpose of the game is to prevent it from coming to an end, to keep everyone in play." If that is not the very source of a myth, then what.

Insofar as this book (a very brief book indeed, with 149 pages) is about games, we as a readers are players also, so maybe there are as many readings as readers. Or almost. Yet, it remains (or let) something that to me is unequivocal: life can be seen as a game so it has rules. This book propose that rules in a temporal basis (finite vs. infinite). If you look for, you could find others, but to me this book offers the most amazing explanation to the philosophical question that beats under our skins all the time: what is life?

A game. "There are at least to kind of games..."

Highly recommended.

Hit Me, Fred: Recollections of a Sideman, by Fred Wesley

With Hit Me, Fred, sensational sideman Fred Wesley Jr. moves front and center to tell his life story. A legendary funk, soul, and jazz musician, Wesley is best known for his work in the late sixties and early seventies with James Brown and as the leader of Brown’s band, Fred Wesley and the JB’s. Having been the band’s music director, arranger, trombone player, and frequent composer, Wesley is one of the original architects of funk music. He describes what it was like working for the Godfather of Soul, revealing the struggle and sometimes stringent discipline behind Brown’s tight, raucous tunes. After leaving Brown and the JB’s, Wesley arranged the horn sections for Parliament, Funkadelic, and Bootsy’s Rubber Band, and led Fred Wesley and the Horny Horns. Adding his signature horn arrangements to the P-Funk mix, Wesley made funk music even funkier.
Wesley’s distinctive sound reverberates through rap and hip-hop music today. In Hit Me, Fred, he recalls the many musicians whose influence he absorbed, beginning with his grandmother and father—both music teachers—and including mentors in his southern Alabama hometown and members of the Army band. In addition to the skills he developed working with James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and the many talented musicians in their milieu, Wesley describes the evolution of his trombone playing through stints with the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, Hank Ballard, and Count Basie’s band. He also recounts his education in the music business, particularly through his work in Los Angeles recording sessions.
Wesley is a virtuoso storyteller, whether he's describing the electric rush of performances when the whole band is in the groove, the difficulties of trying to make a living as a rhythm and blues musician, or the frustrations often felt by sidemen. Hit Me, Fred is Wesley’s story of music-making in all its grit and glory.

From Library Journal
Before hip-hop, there was soul and funk, which gave rise to such highly influential bands and popular stars as Ike and Tina Turner, George Clinton, Parliament, Funkadelic, and, of course, James Brown. Trombonist Wesley has been associated with all of these and more, serving as Brown's bandleader for many years and through his personal sound, compositions, and arrangements contributing immeasurably to the fabric of American popular music. Wesley has written a thoroughly engaging memoir of his life in music, using frank, opinionated, sometimes colorful language that reads as if he were sitting across the room reminiscing. Readers will be fascinated by his insider descriptions of working with the volatile Brown and by his vivid descriptions of the vicissitudes of life as a professional musician; musicians at all levels will find his comments on life on the road particularly compelling. Chapters on his tenure with the Count Basie Orchestra, his struggles with the L.A. music scene, and playing jazz in Denver after brother Ron helped him overcome a cocaine habit round out the picture of Wesley's musicianship and humanity without lapsing into "behind the music" cliche. Recommended for all collections, a real gem for music collections. Mark Woodhouse, Elmira Coll. Lib., NY

Review
“As passionately crafted as one of his solos, Hit Me, Fred becomes a shout-out to all sidemen who play their hearts out--just outside the spotlight. As a musician, Wesley could always capture the feverish moment. Now, as a storyteller, he has revealed yet another way to take us higher.” (Boston Globe)

“[A] remarkable autobiography. . . . This candid and hilarious account of working alongside James Brown, Parliament/Funkadelic, and on his own, should solidify [Wesley’s] reputation as much as the music he created.” (Down Beat)

"In his autobiography Hit Me, Fred, Mr. Wesley talks about dancing around the continent-size ego of James Brown. He juxtaposes the courtliness of the South against the hardscrabble desperation of poverty, mentioning the hideous conditions that created Brown though understanding that nothing could explain his boss’s monstrous behavior." (Elvis Mitchell The New York Times)

“A MUST read for musicians and people who want to know the truth about being on the road. Fred Wesley is hands down one of the greatest.” (Christian McBride)

“This book is straight up! Fred Wesley, he’ll tell you like it is, even if your feelings get hurt, but coming from Fred, for some reason it makes you wanna do better. The book is the bomb!!! Stories are stories but this is real life. Write on, Fred.” (Bootsy Collins)

“Very informative reading! I’m glad and lucky to be part of this legacy. We took it to the bridge. Fred, thanks for the memories.” (Maceo Parker)

"[Fred Wesley is] one of the most influential instrumentalist/composer/arrangers in the annals of R&B, soul-jazz, and hip-hop . . . [and] one of the most sampled musicians in the world today." (Timothy White Billboard)

"[T]he book reads easily—it sounds like Fred's telling you all this over a plate of rice 'n' ribs. . . . When James [Brown] and George [Clinton] are long gone, the music they brought to life between 1967 and 1977 will still be tearing the roof off the sucker—and Fred Wesley was an indispensable part of that revolution." (Dan Warburton Signal to Noise)

From "Misty" to Funky
By Phil Silverman
Not that expected otherwise (see Review title)...just that so many JB-related books are mostly publicity vehicles and covering the same old ground. What made JB tick? Nothing. What is "eeeeahhhh"? Nothing.

I still don't understand "eeeeahhhh" after reading this book...but I now have the most balanced and descriptive tome on b-Soul-Funk-Super Funk, by the Master of the Super Heavy Funk. No Super Heavy Funk without Trombonist Wesley. And big question: would James Brown have transformed into a vaunted *Album* Artist without Mr. Wesley?

The James Brown Musical family reunites here for a james Brown House Party...and all the dysfuction that any family has.

Would have loved some penetrating, personal perspective on the many 45s and albums in Fred was heavily involved. (Though he goes deep on the highly successful movie soundtracks...which *he* basically produced, getting himself fired). We are treated to a fairly extensive Wesley discography. A nice add-on would have been, in this age of star-ratings, said values ascribed to the many titles which hit the bins and now the "web".

Haven't finished this Master Course on Modern Music..and on a "sideman" who stood up front with a King. So great, in addition, that Fred wrote this book with no "help", in the form of "as told to", or "with" [so and so].

Maybe Fred had enough "help" in his career!

Here we have the penultimate "sideman" taking up the pen and delivering anutha mutha. But the opinionated artist-author does not explain how James Brown, the Super Bad Sex Machine, is a...."sissy"? What were all those audience screams about? :)

But later for that. Buy this book. Read this book. Pass The Peas.

[Book comes with a well-produced CD of 12 cuts of Wesley, live and studio].

Riveting! !

This book was everything I thought it would be and more! Sometimes I had to put it side and ROAR with laughter at some of the funny anecdotes and things that go on during road life as a musician. It brought back pleasant and horrid memories of my own life on the road. Mr. Brown was quite a character!

recollections on hit me, fred!
By khaled
I was initially bored with the first chapter or two detailing Fred's life... then when I read the entire book, it made more sense to me. His early life was setting the stage for an amazing journey (literally and figuratively). Fred has an amazing memory. He was able to recall events from 50 years ago like they happened last week. I purchased the book mostly because I was interested in getting some insight on what made JB such a tremendous performer. He shed some light on that. Funky Fred pulls no punches!
