Very entertaining read. Timeless antics by a very accomplished man that makes the impossible look easy and sublime. Interesting juxtaposition with events and places today - even in the prelude to and in the midst of World War II the world seemed a more civil place than it is today.

Suffering can depend on many factors

The black and white photo in the book's cover suggests a decades-past flood. But the episode studied is very recent. The 1997 Grand Forks flood in North Dakota.

Fothergill found a neat way to look at the tribulations of those townspeople. She shows how the experiences were very inhomogeneous. Normally, one might facilely think that in a natural disaster, suffering might be, if not uniformly distributed, then at least randomly so. But here we see that the gender, social class, race and even sexual orientation, can play marked effects on what difficulties a person experiences, and for how long these are endured.

She focuses on women. Since many families suffered, and often, these families had the mothers as the core, holding them together.

Critique of Organizational Behavior by Mr. John W. Newstrom

I like the book because it is complete and easy to understand. It gives a lot of insights on how one's behavior is manifested. The structured presentations are accompanied by real life experiences. It is an easy reference guide even for a novice in organizational set-up. The only part I would like to suggest is that the authors should show an answer chapter for the quentions given in the end of the chapters especially in the case studies. I find it very interesting to know how the authors would solve the organizational problems.

As good as can be expected from a textbook on a dry subject

Textbooks are pretty universally horrible, but the authors/editors manage to do a solid job with this one. To be blunt, this is a book on a subject I don't enjoy for a class I'm required to take - that reading the book isn't an utter chore is a compliment. It's easy to access the information, well-organized, well-written, and concise. That's about all that can be asked of a textbook.

"My parents were great; they encouraged me, they loved me, and they gave me everything a boy could ever want. Melanoma took my father when I was twelve, and my mother tried very hard, but she wasted away quickly after that, and died when I was thirteen. They left me with a strong sense of self, and enough money to make my life into whatever I wanted.

"It was a lack of challenges equal to my abilities, and subsequent boredom that lead me to develop my own little game. It's been years of study, planning and preparation, and it's begun quite well already. Before you judge me, let me assure you that I do feel quite badly for the girls. A sociopath dehumanizes his victims so he can better focus his rage on the true object of his hatred, but I feel neither rage nor hatred. I have to fake both, or else the scenes wouldn't look right.

"But I've never dehumanized any of them. I know their names, and their stories; their hopes and their dreams. I mourn each and every one of the girls I've killed, and I will remember each moment I've spent with them in perfect clarity for as long as I live. That is just part of the cost of this game.

"Here comes the girl with the pink hair to prepare the Butcher Shop for tonight. She calls herself Claire, but that's not her name. She's different from anyone else I have ever met, and I am comfortable telling you that she is unique.

"I have something special planned for Claire."

ascerbic, wisecracking writing style

Even if this book didn't have interesting characters, a fast pace, in fact even if it didn't have a plot, it would be a scintillating read just in the witty, wisecracking writing style alone. The dialog is so sharp, ascerbic and real without being overdone, especially of the narrator and main character Claire St. Claire, that it's kind of like being at a kinky Disneyland without going on the rides--just enjoy the atmosphere. Fascinating murder mystery.

suitable for vegetarians

Energising and contemporary, the butcher shop is packed with lovable, layered characters you'll get to know through their wild and engaging habits, witty dialogue and peeks in to their complex histories. The dark twinged plot sucks you in to Claire's unconventional world over the space of one week as her strange but predictable life takes on a new, less than welcome spin. This quick adventure around a colourful downtown Denver can be gobbled up like a graphic novel, yet despite its easy readability, the sharp style, atmosphere and relationships between it's rich, unique protagonists were both satisfying and left me longing for more enigmatic moon mysteries. This book manages to be as quirky as its heroes bubblegum haircut yet remains grounded on a deeper, intelligent level.

About the Author
Diana Lindstrom has more than 25 years of experience as an electrical engineer and project manager working in electrical power, facilities management, design, construction, and maintenance. As a former certified Project Management Professional (PMP), she managed projects ranging from small designs in electrical system transmission substations to large construction projects in various industries.

Having gained considerable procurement experience writing specifications, using win-win negotiating to obtain contract work, and actually performing simple to fairly complex procurements previously as a project manager, she became interested in developing a new career in supply management. As such, Diana was hired by a major telecommunications company as a strategic sourcing manager. In this role, her average procurement was $100 million spend per year her and largest was $250 million/year. Utilizing her unique skill set, she implemented programs which saved the company millions of dollars each year.

Ms. Lindstrom earned her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University after four years of honorable service in the United States Navy. She earned her PMP from the Project Management Institute (PMI). Diana has been a member of PMI, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and continues to be a member of the Institute of Supply Management (ISM).
