The hottest book I have ever read.

Given the adult nature of this book, I will not review it detail, within a public forum, such as this. This book is erotica and deals with sexual issues. Within this context, some of the scenes do have elements of S&M. This can include spanking, birching and the like, as well as bondage. If you like English style Victorian erotica, don't miss this book.

The hottest piece of victorian erotica ever. The book deals
with the main character from the first 2 books in the series. He meets up with a woman and they open a "boarding and finishing" school where young girls are sent for very special kinds of learning. If you thought Anne Rice's Beauty series of books was hot, Man with a Maid: Book Three, will melt your fingers and your eyes.

Book one in this series is takes a while to get started, but is pretty good. Book two is a yawn. Book three is action from the start and never lets up.

I have to say that I read this book many years ago as a teenager and found it riveting. It was actually referred to as the bible at school by students.
Unfortunately it was lost somewhere along the way. Would love to get another copy but it has been out of print for some years.
If you can get your hands on it you will find it far superior to the other Man and a Maid books in the series.

Though it was a little awkward at first to get Weil's thoughts secondhand, the cumulative effect was impressive. I have a degree in philosophy, and I would have paid almost anything to have a lecturer like her! An illuminating insight into a great mind.

Wonderful and Uplifting...I'm hoping There is Plenty More to Come from This Author!

"Brighten a Senior's Day" is Angelika Schwarz's second book. Her first book, "Wings on Her Heels" was one of the best-written books that I have read in a long time. I'm hoping there is plenty more to come from this wonderful story-teller. Senior's Day is a lovely, uplifting collection of poems and short stories. Some are fun and had me laughing out loud, others are poignant and thought-provoking. I enjoyed the eclectic mix and pace of the book. "Brighten a Senior's Day" is short, easy to read, and a book that would be fun to read together with a loved one. The author even includes some ideas for discussion and questions to help readers remember and tell their own stories. I'm glad to have read this book, and will probably read it a few more times while eagerly waiting for her next book. It's easy to see why Angelika's grandchildren constantly beg for more stories from their Oma's rich imagination....by the end of this book, I wanted more stories too!

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories and poems by author Angelika Schwarz. The author has the ability to make me laugh and even shed a few tears at times. For the most part, the book was uplifting and light and a quick read. It was a great idea to add points of discussion after each chapter too. I'll definitely be reading the second volume.

About the Author
Professor Gaetano Cipolla is Professor Emeritus from St. John's University. He is regarded as the leading scholar for Sicilian language and culture in the US. He is president and editor of Arba Sicula, and he is the principal editor of Legas in New York. He has written extensively on Sicilian culture. His Siciliana: Studies on the Sicilian Ethos, contains some of his most important essays. He is also the leading translator of Sicilian poetry into English, with more than a dozen volume to his credit.

Great book!!

This is the first really well organized sicilian language textbook i've seen. i looked through the first couple chapters and im impressed. if you have jk bonner's sicilian grammar book this is much different and more appealing i think. its organized much like other language text i've seen for spanish or french. of course im a little partial to my own parrati but the one used is good. i think the author was really compelled to pick one and stick with it in order to not make the work too confusing... anyways great book so far! grazzii Gaetano Cipolla!!

Truly excellent and innovative

I am very impressed with the way this book is organized. Over all, an incredibly thorough presentation of Sicilian. I wish other language texts followed the pacing and format of this one. The author strikes an innovative balance that most miss: starts basic but progresses quickly while providing enough vocab translation and grammar explanation; has a great balance of text, photos and space so it's not as stuffy as some overly text-heavy books; nor does it spend toooo much time on cheesy illustrations or too much preschool-type vocabulary as many others do (the dog is big. the cat is little, etc.). Glossy pages and color photos make it very readable and engaging, and the intermediate and very advanced texts in the mid and later portion of the book represent a very diverse selection-poetry, historical, geographical, etc. The exercises are useful w/o being too repetitive, and the CD-though a bit tiresome at times simply b/c it includes recitations of so many exercises and answers-is very helpful. Highly highly recommended.

This is the best book I have ever found on learning Sicilian! My father didn't speak Sicilian too much at home because he wanted us to assimilate and because my mother is from England. But this takes me back to my other half's roots to my remaining family there.

Not democratic

A remarkably accurate description of how Stanford moved from being a good local party school to an international research university. Terman did not pursue a democratic, share the resources policy in levering the strengths of Stanford. He unfairly supported three or four departments and then used their success to pull the others up later. I attended graduate school at Stanford during those years and Lowen's description rings true. Any good university wanting to become great should study this book. I don't think Terman's way is the only way, but it worked for Stanford.

Stanford and the military money

"Creating the Cold War University- The Transformation of Stanford" by Rebecca S. Lowen is an interesting book about how Stanford became wealthy in the 50's and the 60's thanks to federal money and industry contracts. Frederick Terman, often credited as being the father of Silicon Valley, called it a "Win-Win-Win" situation. The government funded basic and applied research (the difference between the two was often fuzzy) to develop military applications during the Cold War, the industry developed the products from the results of the research (and did not always have to directly fund the research), and companies like H-P, Varian, GE benefited greatly the effort. Finally Stanford became wealthy as well as excellent in research (which it was not in the 30's).

Lowen explains that "by 1960, the federal government was spending close to $1B for academic research and university-affiliated research centers, 79 percent of which went to just twenty universities, including Stanford, Berkeley, Caltech, MIT, Harvard and the University of Michigan" (page147). In the Shanghai ranking, Harvard is #1, Stanford is #2, Berkeley is #3, MIT is #5, Caltech is #6 and Michigan #18 only.

Money definitely helps. I had however reacted against the argument as military money can not explain by itself the entrepreneurial spirit that Boston and Silicon Valley developed. Caltech and its JPL laboratory never reached the same start-up activity. But the quality of universities and their wealth is an extremely strong ingredient for successful technology clusters.
