The British Invasion: The Music, the Times, the Era, by Barry Miles

In 1964, North America had a second revolution—but this time we welcomed the British! That year, four mop-tops known as The Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, ushering in a new era of British music, film, fashion, and art. This richly illustrated and informative volume celebrates the pivotal cultural moment when the United States took on a British accent.

The huge influx of talent from across the pond included not only the The Beatles, but also The Dave Clark Five, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, Them (and Van Morrison), The Yardbirds, The Who, and, of course, The Rolling Stones. But the invasion wasn’t only musical: Peter O’Toole, Julie Andrews, Sean Connery, and Michael Caine made a splash in Hollywood, while films like Goldfinger, Alfie, and What’s New, Pussycat? topped box-office charts. The Avengers became cult TV, and Carnaby Street defined hip style, turning Mary Quant, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton into fashion icons.

Filled with photographs that capture one of the most exciting artistic periods in recent history, this is an evocative, irresistible look back.

The Beatles, Twiggy, The Avengers, Georgy Girl -- You Get the Idea
By M. Hill
The British Invasion is a large photo-filled coffee table book. It touches on many subjects - music, movies, television shows and fashion that helped create and define the time period. The book is clearly not intended to comprehensively explore any of the various topiccs but rather, provide an overview.

In addition to fabulous photographs of the most famous British and American groups, notable fashion models and designers and influential movies of the time, the book contains reproductions of the covers of old periodicals like Tiger Beat, Teen Life, Flip and 16 Magazine.

The British Invasion contains many interesting bits of information - for example the group Peter, Paul and Mary were created by Bob Dylan's manager because he thought someone who could sound better singing Dylan's songs would be more successful than the man himself.

I did notice a rather significant error near the end of the book. Jimi Hendrix's famous rendition of the Star Spangled Banner is instead noted as Stars and Stripes Forever.

If the book is in view, it is almost impossible not to pick it up and page through it, and once in hand, it is hard to put down. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book.

Entertaining overview of the British Invasion
By A. Brockhaus
This is a breezy and fun-to-read book that contains many interesting photos and tidbits. The book's primary focus is on music, and the Beatles serve as a sort of theme throughout. There are a few forays into film and fashion as well, though nothing that distracts long from the focus on music. The book is upbeat, pretty much avoiding all of the darker aspects of the era. Oddly enough, the only part of the book which deviates from the cheerful narration is in the last 4 paragraphs where the author remarks that there will never be another British invasion (or any type of "invasion" for that matter) since "there are no more social or cultural borders to cross." But that only serves to heighten one's appreciation for books like this that can provide a glimpse into the past.

FABULOUS!
By devon
If you are looking for a book that takes you back to the 60's or are a child of that era, this is THE book. The first part introduces the reader to the beginning of the 60's in America - the beach party bingo movies, artists like Chuck Berry, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many more, and then the British Invasion. What I love about this book is that Barry Miles writes not only about the more well - known British Bands but also of the many others not always given their moment in the sun - Manfred Mann, the Yardbirds, Cream, Small Faces, Ian Whitcomb, Donovan, etc. British film is also explored - Blow Up, the James Bond pictures, Georgy Girl and if that isn't enough, the British influence on fashion - Mary Quant/Carnaby Street, Jane Asher and Patti Boyd, Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy. The last part of this wonderful book brings us back to the US with bands like Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, Jimi Hendrix and the list goes on. There are pictures of original posters, albums and magazines of that time - do you remember Tiger Beat and 16 magazine? I highly recommend this book!

Eyewitness Memory: Theoretical and Applied PerspectivesFrom Psychology Press

The organization of the first Society for Applied Research in Memory and Cognition (SARMAC) conference centered around two specifically identifiable research topics -- autobiographical memory and eyewitness memory. These two areas -- long-time staples on the menu of investigators of memory in more natural settings -- differ on a variety of dimensions, perhaps most notably on their specific goals for scientific inquiry and application. For many questions about memory and cognition that are of interest to scientific psychology, there have been historical as well as rather arbitrary reasons for their assignment to the autobiographical or eyewitness memory fields.

Perhaps as a result of differing historical orientations, the first volume's seven autobiographical memory chapters focus upon the qualities or types of recall from research participants, whereas the seven chapters in the eyewitness memory volume generally focus upon the quantity (a concern for completeness) and accuracy of recall. This interest in the ultimate end-product and its application within the legal process in general encourages eyewitness memory investigators to modify their testing procedures continually in an attempt to gain even more information from participants about an event. Indeed, several of the eyewitness memory chapters reflect such attempts.

Beyond the specific contributions of each chapter to the literature on autobiographical and eyewitness memory, the editors hope that the reader will come away with some general observations:
* the autobiographical and eyewitness memory fields are thriving;
* these two fields are likely to remain center stage in the further investigation of memory in natural contexts;
* although the autobiographical and eyewitness memory chapters have been segregated in these two volumes, the separation is often more arbitrary than real and connections between the two areas abound;
* the two research traditions are entirely mindful of fundamental laboratory methods, research, and theory -- sometimes drawing their research inspirations from that quarter; and
* the two fields -- though driven largely by everyday memory concerns -- can contribute to a more basic understanding of memory at both an empirical and a theoretical level.

Women's Barracks: Femmes Fatales, by Tereska Torres

Originally published in 1950, this account of life among female Free French soldiers in a London barracks during World War II sold four million copies in the United States alone and many more millions worldwide. The novel is based on the real-life experiences of the author, Tereska Torres, who escaped from occupied France. She arrived as a refugee in London and joined other exiles enlisting in Charles de Gaulle's army, then stationed in Britain awaiting an invasion of their homeland by Allied forces. But Women's Barracks is no ordinary war story.

As the Blitz rains down over London, taboos are broken, affairs start and stop and hearts are won and lost. Women's Barracks was banned for obscenity in several states. It was also denounced by the House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials in 1952 as an example of how the paperback industry was promoting "moral degeneracy". But in spite of such efforts - or perhaps, in part, because of them - the novel became a record-breaking best seller and inspired a whole new genre: lesbian pulp.

a misunderstood minor classic
By Simon Mawer
To describe this book as "lesbian-themed pulp" does it a grave disservice. Perhaps that is how it was perceived in the US but that says a great deal about American attitudes in the immediate post-war period and nothing whatsoever about the book itself, which is very much of its time: a touching, bitter-sweet evocation of the life of French women in the London of the 1940s. Think Francoise Sagan if you want the style - light, sharp and cunning. And moving, actually very moving. It worries me how many people might be put off buying it because of the way it has been, and apparently still is being, published.

The Many Flavors of Love
By Rapscallion
I have the 1961 printing of this book with the very pulpy looking cover and the subtitle "The frank autobiography of a French girl soldier." That statement and some of the sensationalist marketing have doubtless led some readers astray. This isn't an autobiography. It's a novel that was most likely inspired by the author's experiences during WWII in a London barracks. The narrator is an objective reporter. She's not an actual character in the novel in the sense that you ever see her in action. All the other women confide their innermost hearts to her and she is sort of an omniscient being in her ability to go with them wherever they go and know whatever they know. Obviously, this is fiction. It may have been marketed as an autobiography early on to escape censorship because any novel that contained homosexual content in those days was considered pornography, regardless of how graphic (or not) it was. By calling it an autobiography, therefore true, it became more legitimized.

Yes, there are lesbians and some very mild sexual scenes involving them. Certainly there is nothing graphic or titillating in this book. In any female military setting anywhere in the world, you will find lesbians. To have left them out of this story would have been a huge and noticable omission. The story is about all the ways these women go about their romantic pursuits and sexual awakenings. Lesbians, bisexuals, virgins, tarts, gold diggers, etc., are all represented. The author/narrator herself doesn't participate in these actvities, but puts herself forth as a student of love, trying to determine if love is worth the effort or if such a thing as true and honest love even exists. By describing the affairs of her bunk mates, she attempts to find the answers.

The narrator, who is supposed to be a young and naive virgin, doesn't come across that way. She sounds much wiser than that. She's also very sympathetic to all the characters, including the lesbians, whom she considers sad, but legitimate and worthy of respect. One of the ways this book might be considered revolutionary is how the lesbians are described as just being what they are, natural and in many ways just like everyone else during a period of history when homosexuals were considered mentally ill or worse. The narrator portrays them as lonely and on the fringes of society, which they certainly were back then. But she doesn't back away from examining their type of love just like all the others.

This is not a story about lesbians. It's a story about a diverse group of French women and their romantic adventures and misadventures in the 1940s as they go from eager, optimistic girls to disillusioned women, cut off from their families and country. It starts out like a steamy potboiler, but it soon becomes an engrossing story set against the backdrop of war-torn London, and by the end is actually very moving.

It isn't great literature, but I enjoyed it.

Excellent book on interpersonal relationships
By Marian
Although this has been billed as "lesbian pulp fiction," that is not a very good description of it. While some of the characters are lesbians, others are straight. The book is, rather, a novel about women and their various relationships--friendships as well as romantic relationships. Very insightful, timeless and free of platitudes. It paints a picture of human interactions and responses during a time of war and deprivation, and is written with compassion and thoughtfulness.

I highly recommend it.

The third policeman, by Flann O'Brien

A masterpiece of black humour from the renown comic and acclaimed author of 'At Swim-Two-Birds' - Flann O'Brien. A thriller, a hilarious comic satire about an archetypal village police force, a surrealistic vision of eternity, the story of a tender, brief, unrequited love affair between a man and his bicycle, and a chilling fable of unending guilt, 'The Third Policeman' is comparable only to 'Alice in Wonderland' as an allegory of the absurd. Distinguished by endless comic invention and its delicate balancing of logic and fantasy, 'The Third Policeman' is unique in the English language.

Amazon.com Review
A comic trip through hell in Ireland, as told by a murderer, The Third Policeman is another inspired bit of confusing and comic lunacy from the warped imagination and lovably demented pen of Flann O'Brien, author of At Swim-Two-Birds. There's even a small chance you'll figure out what's going on if you read the publisher's note that appears on the last page.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. If ever a book was brought to life by a reading, it is this presentation of O'Brien's posthumously published classic. Norton individually crafts voices and personalities for each character in such a way that a listener might imagine an entire cast of voice talent working overtime. This is a comic/surreal tale of a one-legged gentleman farmer who participates in a poorly planned botched robbery-turned-murder, only to find himself having a long conversation with the dead man shortly after the deed. In addition he hears from his own soul, who he names Joe. Joe's voice is that of a wry observer with a voice of calm, removed authority, whereas dead man Mathers' voice is completely nasal, at once sickly and droll. Mathers sends the farmer to a two-dimensional barracks of three metaphysical policemen. Here he finds himself in a world where people can become bicycles and eternity is within walking distance. Norton's rendition of the main policeman, Sergeant Pluck, tips the reading into a full-out performance. The enormous blustery fellow with red cheeks and brushy mustache and eyebrows is portrayed like a jolly yet dangerous Disney walrus. Norton's Irish brogue, accentuated to different degrees with the various characters, ties the ribbon on a perfect presentation of this absurd and chilling masterpiece. (Apr.)

Review
'Flann O'Brien learned from Joyce the art of tuning language to a lyrical pitch, which he could then turn to his purpose, whether it was to be plain foolery, unconcealed indignation or high comedy. The best of his contemporaries and many subsequent Irish writers have much to thank him for.' Sunday Times 'Flann O'Brien is inventive, his storytelling is swift and sure, making the eccentric seem natural and the commonplace hilarious.' The Times 'Even with "Ulysses" and "Finnegans Wake" behind him, James Joyce might have been envious.' Observer 'Wonderful. "The Third Policeman" is a great masterpiece of black humour.' George Mackay Brown

O'Brien is just WEIRD!!! and that's a good thing.
By Colton C. Sorrels
Flann O'Brien isn't for everyone. There are quite a few one star ratings (and I'm sure those people would have rather given it a zero if they could), but I think that's a good thing. Here's why. O'Brien is just weird, bizarre, and perhaps the most "out there" writer I have ever read. Your classic drug trip books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "On the Road" have nothing on this guy. If you aren't paying attention to every little detail in the writing then you just aren't going to get it. With that being said, some people are just too dense to get his prose. This is a novelist I want people to hate, because honestly he's my guy...I don't want you to get it.

"The Third Policeman" didn't immerse the reader into O'Brien's unique and bizarre writing style immediately. In fact that was one of the the things about this novel that I found interesting. I thought I was reading gothic literature like Hawthorne, or Brockden Brown at first. It wasn't until the first twenty pages that O'Brien introduces you to the bizarre world in which you will inhabit for the remainder of the novel. There are certain aspects of this novel that I didn't enjoy as much as his first novel, "At Swim Two Birds," but I thought this novel didn't have as many nonsensical moments that dragged on for too long. All in all, this is a great read. This was his second novel, which became his last since it wasn't published until after his death, and it is only the second novel of his I have read. I can't wait to read the rest of them!

Is it about a bicycle?
By Ron Ginzler
Yes, and how people turn into bicycles and vice-versa. It's impossible to categorize this wonderful novel. It combines elements of fantasy, magic realism, horror, humor, satire, and it could only have been written by an Irishman. Finished in 1940 but not published until 1967, a year after the author's death, the main text concerns the adventures of a man who commits a robbery and murder in rural Ireland, but following this, bizarre and impossible things occur when he is captured by two peculiar policemen and imprisoned in a peculiar police station. A series of long footnotes parallel the text, detailing the protagonist's obsession with the absurd physicist De Selby and his crackpot ideas. (This device is copied by Robert Anton Wilson in his Historical Illuminatus Chronicles, and possibly by Nabokov in Pale Fire, though it seems unlikely Nabokov had read the manuscript of the then-unpublished Third Policeman.) Another device, of separating the protagonist into two separate characters who then converse with each other, may have been copied by Phillip K. Dick in his equally strange novel Valis.
The only other writer I know who measures up to this standard of originality, humor and strangeness, is the late, great, R. A. Lafferty. Read this book. Then read it again.

Interesting Narrator, Strong Absurdity
By Unruly Louise
I personally love stories that have a very distant tone in them - they always make me wonder what the narrator is hiding, why they are so detached from themselves, and rather like a person drawing backwards, it makes me very curious indeed.

The Third Policeman is a book exactly like that. From the start I was really drawn in by this sense of a very odd narrator who tells a story that, for the first few chapters at least, left me feeling unsettled and a bit scared. After that it moves into the realm of pure absurdity. The good thing about this was that I stopped feeling so unsettled as I had at the start. The bad thing about it was that I did put it down a number of times and forget to pick it back up. But every time I would pick it up again, I did enjoy it, I just kept losing the thread that was tying it all together.

I read somewhere that this book found difficulties in being published - that, I think, is a bit shame. It is a good book in terms of its originality and voice, and I'm glad it finally found a publisher. The author is adept at his craft - I love his use of words and conversations - and if you're the kind of reader who enjoys strong absurdity, I think this would really entertain you.

Good read!
By Charmz
This is not a book that is to be read as short stories, as it is full of factual opinions, proven truths, dated discoveries, etc. Each chapter covers one society or location, each chapter filled with facts and theories as to what may or could have occurred. Some of these civilizations have left clues behind to help us begin to figure out what happened, while others have left nothing at all for us to follow. It was truly interesting to read about cultures and societies that we know about through various means that disappeared without a record of why.

I found that the author had done his research, the book was enjoyable and informative and it was a great learning experience, which was a good thing.

I think the author takes more time in conducting research before having this book.
By Rouge E-Book Reader
Honestly upon reading and after reading this book I have little doubt as the authenticity of the write-ups inside. But granted that all the details and information inside are correct then I am happy having this one. The intention of the author is really great of sharing his knowledge to the readers.

Understanding the Future, by Studying the Past!
By Kindle Customer
"Lost Civilizations" is an exceptionally well written and organized book. The author has the ability to transfix the reader with excitement and awe regarding the level of advancement and sophistication of the host of lost civilizations that have been discovered and studied, and his belief that there are many more left to be discovered. Many people I know are under the impression that ancient cultures were primitive, violent, disease ridden, with people that were primitive, ignorant savages living in caves or hovels, when nothing could be further from the truth. The more you study the ancients you realize that our ancestors either developed or had access to technologies that rival and in some cases surpass those of today. The more I study the history of our ancient ancestors the more I find startling similaritis between them and us. It is like a chain that link us, a chain forged by hopes, dreams, courage, hard work, ambition, spirituality, love, a desire for a better tomorrow for their children, in a word they are us. The more we study the past, read books like that of Mr. Phillips, I believe that we will better understand ourselves, how to improve our world. How to avoid their mistake and even what the future holds for us. Edwin C. Lowe, US Army (Civilian) Retired.

Jesus: A Pilgrimage, by James Martin

James Martin, SJ, gifted storyteller, editor at large of America magazine, popular media commentator, and New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, brings the Gospels to life in Jesus: A Pilgrimage, and invites believers and seekers alike to experience Jesus through Scripture, prayer and travel.

Combining the fascinating insights of historical Jesus studies with profound spiritual insights about the Christ of faith, Father Martin recreates the world of first-century Galilee and Judea to usher you into Jesus's life and times and show readers how Jesus speaks to us today. Martin also brings together the most up-to-date Scripture scholarship, wise spiritual reflections, and lighthearted stories about traveling through the Holy Land with a fellow (and funny) Jesuit, visiting important sites in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

The person at the heart of the Gospels can seem impossibly distant. Stories about his astonishing life and ministry—clever parables that upended everyone's expectations, incredible healings that convinced even skeptics, nature miracles that dazzled the dumbstruck disciples—can seem far removed from our own daily lives, hard to understand, and at times irrelevant. But in Jesus you will come to know him as Father Martin knows him: Messiah and Savior, as well as friend and brother.

Review
“James Martin’s riveting new meditation on Jesus is one of the best books I’ve read in years—on any subject. Jesus is a love letter to the first-century Jewish radical Martin has devoted his life to following. Bravo, Father Martin, for writing a must-read.” (Mary Karr, author of Lit)

“Do we really need yet another book about Jesus? If the book is this one, the answer is yes, we do. Jim Martin’s approach to a well picked–over subject is unique and original, and it will net the reader a glimpse into the Nazarene not available elsewhere.” (Harvey Cox,, Hollis Research Professor of Divinity, Harvard Divinity School)

“Fr. James Martin, S.J. is refreshingly innovative in his Jesus: A Pilgrimage. He has a knack for giving a new perspective to the familiar, making the reader exclaim, ‘Ah, yes!’ A superb gift.” (Archbishop Desmond Tutu)

“One of the best religion writers today, Fr. Martin has produced a remarkable combination of modern scholarship on the Gospels, his experiences on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, his own creative imagination and sense of humor, and wise advice pertaining to Christian life.” (Daniel J. Harrington, S.J., Professor of New Testament, Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, editor of New Testament Abstracts)

“Martin communicates a joyful faith in God’s healing and the ultimate hope offered by the Resurrection. Throughout, vivid details of his search in blistering heat for holy sites both authentic and dubious anchor this complex, compelling spiritual testimony.” (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review)

“What can be said about Jesus that’s never been said before? Martin helps answer that question through an insightful, balanced, intelligent, widely-embracing, and faith-filled account of his own journey in search of Jesus. A book for everyone, regardless of creed or background. James Martin at his best!” (Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, author of The Holy Longing)

“This is a sensitive, hearfelt inquiry into the person of Jesus. James Martin encounters Jesus again and again on a pilgrimage through Israel. In his book the great texts of the Gospels come to live and are transformed for the reader into an encounter with Jesus as he really was.” (Rev. Gerhard Lohfink, author of Jesus of Nazareth)

“James Martin does something remarkable in this book. He invites you to accompany him on a pilgrimage through the Holy Land. New Testament scholarship opens up the life of Jesus so that the Gospels can speak to each of us personally and transform us as they did their first hearers.” (John W. Martens, PhD, Associate Professor of Theology, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota)

“Jim Martin’s book on Jesus is a gem. Learned yet highly accessible, he weaves together a number of insights gleaned from the Gospels, a recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Ignatian spirituality, and his personal and pastoral experience. This is a Jesus book I highly recommend.” (Thomas D. Stegman, S.J., Associate Professor of New Testament, Boston College School of Theology and Ministry)

“James Martin has a gift for captivating both the reader’s head and heart. What a joy to take this personal and fascinating pilgrimage with Fr. Martin, one that leads to a refreshing awareness and understanding of the beloved Carpenter from Nazareth. This book not only informs, it inspires.” (Joyce Rupp, author of Praying Our Goodbyes and Open the Door: A Journey to the True Self)

“Father Martin calls archeologists and exegetes to witness in his narrative. He bares his own life experiences. It’s all at the service of the greater story—the greatest ever told. If I have the privilege of visiting the Holy Land again, I will see it differently because I’ve read this book.” (Scott Hahn, Professor of Theology and Scripture at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, author of Understanding Scripture)

“It isn’t often that a book invites you to make a journey through the Holy Land in the company of an inspiring, well–informed and entertaining guide like James Martin. Enjoy the journey, but don’t be surprised if it changes you.” (Margaret Silf, author of Inner Compass and Simple Faith)

“Martin offers a very personal meditative memoir, but one informed by critical biblical and archaeological scholarship and graced with his accustomed narrative skill. His entertaining, thoughtful, and inspiring account will delight both seasoned pilgrims and those who want to be.” (Harold W. Attridge, Sterling Professor of Divinity and emeritus dean, Yale Divinity School)

“Whether encountering Jesus for the first time, or wanting to know him better, you’ll find a wonderful guide in Fr. Martin. He takes us on his tour of the Holy Land, treading in the footsteps of Jesus. More than a travelogue or commentary on scripture—it’s a life-transforming pilgrimage.” (Robert Ellsberg, editor of The Duty of Delight: The Diaries of Dorothy Day)

“Fr. James Martin, chaplain to the Colbert nation, uses the geography of the Holy Land to map out the separate plots of earth called historical Jesus, christology, and personal (as well as ecclesial) spirituality. Every reader will enjoy the journey through this triple territory with such an insightful companion.” (Professor John P. Meier, William K. Warren Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame)

“In this inspiring medley of travelogue, academically informed Bible study, and pilgrimage, Martin resurrects an ancient Christian form of spirituality and serves as a trustworthy guide through the life of Jesus. Jesus is a must-read for those who want their Bible brought to life with accuracy, sincerity, and sparkle.” (Candida Moss, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, University of Notre Dame)

“Want a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with a reliable guide? Open these pages and travel with Fr. Jim Martin. He’s at his best here, opening the Gospel mysteries, but with a light touch. Serious scholar, yes—but mostly a pilgrim believer trying to make his way, just like us.” (Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, author of Dead Man Walking)

“This delightful book combines personal reflections, spiritual nuggets, insights from top biblical scholars, theologians, and archaeologists, in a folksy and engaging style. As Martin shares his pilgrimage, he makes Jesus and his land and times come alive, inviting others to meet Jesus and embark on their own pilgrimage.” (Barbara E. Reid, O.P., Professor of New Testament and Vice President and Academic Dean, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago)

“Written in clear, accessible prose and laced with the author’s trademark good cheer, this is a deeply personal narrative. Read this book and be inspired to encounter Jesus in your own way, in the company of a spiritually insightful guide.” (Elizabeth A. Johnson, CSJ, Distinguished Professor, Fordham University)

“Jesus is a delight to read and a work of substance for the committed Christian. Vividly written, and rich in historical detail and analysis, it’s also a movingly personal journey of faith. This is a book that will linger in the reader’s heart.” (Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia)

“This is an invaluable book for anyone desiring to know more about Jesus, and how his life can illumine our own spiritual pilgrimage. James Martin makes familiar Gospel stories fresh, and helps us see how in our ordinary lives we might better answer God’s call to conversation and conversion.” (Kathleen Norris, author of The Cloister Walk)

“Fr. Martin provides those who have stepped away from their faith, or who are not believers, the opportunity to better know who Jesus was. Whether you are one of Jesus’ most fervent disciples or a questioning observer, this book will help you understand Jesus is our brother and friend forever.” (Cardinal Sean O'Malley, archbishop of Boston)

“The book is solidly based in contemporary Jesus studies but its charm lies in the insight a fellow Christian has gleaned into the God-man of the Gospels through his own personal and deepening relationship with Jesus.” (Sandra M. Schneiders, Jesuit School of Theology, Santa Clara University)

“A consideration of Christ, human and divine, from an on-native-ground perspective…. An intelligent, lively travelogue…and a welcome complement to a direct reading of the Gospels.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“James Martin’s witty account of his pilgrimage in the Holy Land gives one an acute sense of how wonderful it is that God has walked in our land and shared our lives. It touches our imagination and ignites it anew.” (Timothy Radcliffe, OP, former Master General of the Dominican Order)

“Highly accessible, inviting-even magnetic-and meant to be read by those who have always wanted a companion, a mentor, and an understanding friend to accompany them. A profound book.” (Joan Chittister, OSB, author of Called to Question)

“Part travelogue, part memoir and part very Martinesque - that is, funny, conversational and deep.” (Washington Post)

“About halfway through the Gospel of Mark, Jesus asks... ‘Who do you think I am?’ In his new book, Jesus: A Pilgrimage, Jesuit priest, Jim Martin, searches for an answer and his answer just might surprise you.” (Huffington Post)

“Mixed with theology, history, tradition, and Fr. Martin’s wisdom and wit, we put ourselves in the exact moment and location of Jesus and try and picture what it must have been like for both Jesus and those around Him.” (Stuart's Study Blog)

“The more personal and the more subjective and even the more chatty the account of this pilgrimage becomes, the closer we draw, even without realizing it, to its divine-human subject.” (Peter Milward, SJ, St. Austin's Review)

“The blend of distilled scholarship and narrative is infectious. Travelogue, spirituality and theological reflection combine with wit and human insight.” (The Tablet)

“[Jesus] blends Bible study, spiritual reflection, personal memoir and travel writing in a way that (mercifully) differs from the classically dull, dry volumes on the life of Christ.” (Busted Halo)

An inspirational memoir that stands as a fresh perspective on Jesus with Martin’s own travel narrative and a Bible study that is scholarly and inspirational, this book is perfectly pitched for general readers with his fluid, magazine-style prose- definitely a “mash-up” of styles, but Martin makes it work! (ReadTheSpirit)

A treasure...a wise and entertaining book that should appeal to the spiritual pilgrim in all of us, no matter what the faith and no matter whether believer or nonbeliever. (Chicago Tribune)

“Jesus: A Pilgrimage is the Jesus book for smart people who are seeking to understand the singular person of Jesus of Nazareth through the illuminated lens of Father Martin’s intelligent, funny, prayerful and profound faith.” (Paul Raushenbush, Executive Religion Editor for The Huffington Post)

“I’m beginning to feel that [Jesus: A Pilgrimage] might be a ‘must have’ for Christians who want a more rounded, personal experience of Christ. Or for those who don’t understand the “Christian thing” and would like some general context of their own.” (Happy Catholic Blog)

“Part travelog, part biblical commentary, part memoir, part meditation … This will appeal to readers (not just Catholics) seeking an introduction to the Gospels that is personal but rooted in serious scholarship.” (Library Journal)

“It takes a ‘human one’ to write well about the consummate ‘Human One,’ Jesus. And James Martin does that very well! Come to see, and be seen by, the one who has loved so many of us into life.” (Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation, Alubuquerque, NM, author of Everything Belongs)

“Martin draws on solid scholarship and also on his own experience, along with an accessible and attractive style, all of which makes this book an attractive and substantial spiritual reading.” (The Bible Today)

“Outstanding...[Martin is] a masterful teacher and story teller.” (Our Sunday Visitor)

“Remarkable...fascinating... Martin interweaves scholarship into a popular-level narrative which will at once introduce many readers to their work and at the same time challenge readers to understand the Gospel narratives in new ways.” (Catholic News Service)

“Combining memoir, theology and history, Father Martin recounts how his sense of place in the churches and holy sites he visits illuminates his Sense of Place as a follower of Jesus. His honest, sensitive reading of Scripture through the lens of intelligence and faithfulness left me feeling joyful.” (First for Women)

“My highest recommendation...Just read this book and you will understand more about the times in which Jesus lived-and more about what the Gospel stories mean-than you could ever imagine.” (The Leaven)

From the Back Cover

A gifted storyteller and spiritual director, Father James Martin, SJ, invites readers to experience the stories of the Gospels in a completely new, vivid, and exciting way to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus. Moving sequentially through the Gospels, considering not only familiar passages but also the "hidden life" of Jesus, the book offers a bold retelling of the life of Christ, faithful to the Christian tradition, while meditating on parts of the narrative that have often escaped notice.

Martin provides personal stories from his own life, the most up-to-date biblical scholarship, and powerful anecdotes from beloved spiritual teachers, and brings the reader along on his own real-life travels through the Holy Land.

Combining the fascinating insights of historical Jesus studies with profound spiritual reflections about the Christ of faith, Martin re-creates the world of first-century Galilee and Judea to usher us into Jesus's life and times and reveal how Jesus speaks to us today. Jesus: A Pilgrimage is an invitation to know Jesus as Father Martin knows him: Messiah and Savior, as well as friend and brother.

A journey through the Holy Land and life of Jesus
By Stuart Dunn
Jesus: A Pilgrimage begins with an introduction that clearly lays out what the book is and more importantly, what the book is not. I point this out because, I generally go in with preconceived notions of what I expect or want from a book. Fr. Martin is quick to point out that this book is not a theological discussion on who Jesus is, nor is it a Bible commentary. This book, however, is a look at Jesus, as we see Him in the Gospels, through the viewpoint of Fr. Martin's education, experience, and a recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land. If we keep this in mind when reading the book, we can give it a proper review.

Each chapter is laid out in the same format. Fr. Martin first mentions the place he is going to visit. He then describes the journey there. Details from this include the actual process of travelling to the location, scenery along the way, and bits of the culture and environment he encountered. Then, comes the heart of each chapter - his reflections. Mixed with theology, history, tradition, and Fr. Martin's wisdom and wit, we put ourselves in the exact moment and location of Jesus and try and picture what it must have been like for both Jesus and those around Him. We then end with the Scripture passage which served as the basis for the site Fr. Martin visited.

The most interesting chapter in this book to me was entitled, "Nazareth." In this chapter Fr. Martin talks about the "Hidden Life" of Jesus. This term refers to the period of Jesus' life, age 12-30, that is absent in the Bible. Fr. Martin, like many, are drawn to this period of Jesus' life because they imagine it is a lot like our lives. "None of us is going to be preaching and performing miracles - at least not as Jesus did - but all of us live everyday lives, as Jesus did in Nazareth, being taught and cared for by our parents, loving and squabbling with our families, playing with our friends, learning what it means to be an adult, and in time earning a living." I never thought of Jesus in this light, but it does make sense. In this chapter, I also learned about just how small and poor Nazareth was. Knowing this, it really puts into perspective the disparaging remarks people make regarding Nazareth. It also shows you the environment Jesus grew up in, and influenced his parables.

Fr. Martin is an excellent storyteller. He does a fine job painting pictures of the places he visited, and he draws out details in the Gospels that one could easily miss. There were, however, parts of this book that I didn't enjoy. The beginning annoyed me a little when he waffled about wanting to go to the Holy Land. (Really what Christian, wouldn't want to see the place of Jesus?!) I also got bored in the beginning reading about the trek to get to each of their destinations, and would think to myself, "Hurry up and get there." However, I eventually accepted that that was the nature of this book as a personal pilgrimage. It would be incomplete to ignore the journey and focus solely on the destination. Those complaints aside, I still enjoyed the book. It was quite interesting to see Jesus, the Gospel passages, and the modern day Holy Land through the eyes of Fr. Martin.

This book was provided to me for free by Harper Collins in exchange for an honest review.

Another winner by Fr. Martin
By selketine
I've read several of Fr. Martin's books and this one is possibly the best one of all. I've always wanted to visit Israel and take in the sites and reading this book, I feel like I'm there with him. He writes with such humor, wit and insight that it is hard to put this book down. Like the author says, this isn't a theology book, but a book about his travels seen through the lens of his faith (as a Catholic and Jesuit priest) - but his writing is "down to earth" and accessible. He isn't writing it just for Catholics or Christians necessarily, so I think anyone with an interest in the Jesus of history and/or Jesus of faith will find something to like here. I've never met Fr. Martin but I think he would be an excellent teacher and a fun person to travel with - and all of that comes out in this book. I just wish he could write books more quickly so we didn't have to wait so long between them - ha ha!

Exceptional
By Kerry Walters
It's difficult to fit this marvelous book comfortably into any one genre. Some of it is personal memoir of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land the author made with a fellow-Jesuit (for example, the author's search for a site, the Bay of Parables, whose location stumps everyone except a German Benedictine). Part of it is exegesis, with an exploration of the sometimes hidden meaning of the New Testament's original Greek (did you know, for example, that the Greek word, existasthai, for "to be amazed" that Mark uses to describe those who have just witnessed one of Jesus's healings means "to stand outside oneself," to be so amazed that one's yanked out of one's intellectual skin? Part of it is pastoral/devotional reflection on events recorded in scripture. (In reflecting on the Eucharist, for example, Martin muses on how Jesus moved his "body" from place to place to give himself to others, and how we're called to do likewise--to go where we can feed people.)

In the hands of a less skilled and less insightful author, combining these three genres between a single volume could be a train wreck. But Martin pulls off the job seamlessly. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY TIME ANDTHE WASHINGTON POST •LOCUS AWARD WINNER

“The Shattered Seas trilogy has worked its way into a very exclusive group of my favorite fantasy novels of all time.”—James Dashner, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maze Runner

“A fast-paced tale of betrayal and revenge that grabbed me from page 1 and refused to let go.”—George R. R. Martin

“I swore an oath to avenge the death of my father. I may be half a man, but I swore a whole oath.”

Prince Yarvi has vowed to regain a throne he never wanted. But first he must survive cruelty, chains, and the bitter waters of the Shattered Sea. And he must do it all with only one good hand.

The deceived will become the deceiver.

Born a weakling in the eyes of his father, Yarvi is alone in a world where a strong arm and a cold heart rule. He cannot grip a shield or swing an axe, so he must sharpen his mind to a deadly edge.

The betrayed will become the betrayer.

Gathering a strange fellowship of the outcast and the lost, he finds they can do more to help him become the man he needs to be than any court of nobles could.

Will the usurped become the usurper?

But even with loyal friends at his side, Yarvi finds that his path may end as it began—in twists, and traps, and tragedy.

Praise for Half a King

“Tremendously entertaining . . . lightning-fast and filled with a wonderful collection of rogues, villains and two-faced bastards . . . From the first chapter [Joe Abercrombie] wastes no time as the reader is swept up in a gripping tale of betrayal and revenge.”—SciFi Now

“Once this plot has its teeth in you, it will not let go. . . . Abercrombie’s masterful storytelling means that everything, from the characters that you come to love and despise, to the sprawling world that is explored, is enthralling.”—Fantasy Book Review

“Abercrombie’s Shattered Sea is a fantastic yet believable backdrop to Yarvi’s struggle, a vivid imaginary land.”—The Seattle Times

“Intriguing characters . . . nonstop action.”—Chicago Tribune

“Half a King is my favorite book by Joe Abercrombie so far, and that’s saying something.”—Patrick Rothfuss

“As in all Abercrombie’s books, friends turn out to be enemies, enemies turn out to be friends; the line between good and evil is murky indeed; and nothing goes quite as we expect. With eye-popping plot twists and rollicking good action, Half a King is definitely a full adventure.”—Rick Riordan

“Enthralling! An up-all-night read.”—Robin Hobb

“Polished and sharp, perhaps his most technically proficient novel yet . . . I dare you to read the first chapter and try not to turn the next page.”—Brent Weeks

“Half a King can be summed up in a single word: masterpiece. It’s a coming-of-age story. It’s a Viking saga. It’s a revenge tale and family drama and the return of the prodigal son. But most of all, it’s this: a short time alongside people as weak and blundering as we are and, in the midst of it all, as heroic. Far too short a time, as it turns out. What a wonderful book.”—Myke Cole

“Half a King is full of all the adventure I’ve come to expect from Abercrombie and a tenderness I never knew he had.”—Sam Sykes

From Booklist
Yarvi succeeds to the throne of Gettland when his father and elder brother are killed. But Yarvi is a reluctant king. Because of a deformed hand, he has always felt an inadequate son to his father and now an inadequate king. He is engaged to his cousin, but his uncle is not interested in having a weakling for a son-in-law nor “half a king” for the country. The uncle’s coup topples Yarvi from the throne, but Yarvi escapes with his life. Yarvi’s escape leads, however, only to enslavement by people from neighboring Vansterland. Out from this situation emerges a long and arduous quest as Yarvi swears to avenge his father’s and brother’s deaths and dislodge his uncle from the throne. In the process, Yarvi attains a new maturity, the most important component of which is a newfound confidence. Defeat of his uncle does not mean that Yarvi steps up and occupies the throne again. Instead, he wisely effects an alternative scenario. The world building here is complete and convincing, and the characters are arresting in their all-too-human nature. --Brad Hooper

“The Shattered Seas trilogy has worked its way into a very exclusive group of my favorite fantasy novels of all time. The pacing is perfect, the characters deep and true and real, the world rich and authentic, the plot full of twists and turns. Perhaps my favorite part is that no one is purely good or evil: Each and every character has layers upon layers that are a joy to discover. I tore through all three books and truly hope that someday Joe Abercrombie returns to this magnificent, captivating world.”—James Dashner, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maze Runner

Boy-kings and Vikings and Bloodthirsty Oaths!
By Neil Hepworth
After six excellent books filled with grit and gore, written for adults, Joe Abercrombie decided (as I understand it) to recharge his batteries by writing a fantasy YA trilogy, starting with Half a King. You’d be forgiven if you thought, after reading the first few chapters, that this was going to be a normal, mundane, (if well written) coming of age YA story. Well, you’d be wrong. And not half wrong, but all wrong. (How many half-jokes can we fit into this review? Because if a half-joke is a joke that is only kinda funny, well, I’m full of those - just ask my students...)

The story starts as one might expect after having read the back of the book: boy prince who unexpectedly becomes king only to have it snatched away from him, thus igniting a revenge story. That does indeed cover the first few chapters, and while revenge is the motivating force for our heroic half king, it’s not a glorious revenge (well, the book is glorious, but the revenge is sour). Half a King is an intelligent and powerful combination of adventure and vengeance filtered through the lens that reminds the reader revenge rarely turns out the way you think it should.

What’s not immediately clear by either the cover art nor the back cover blurb is that this book is less fantasy and more viking. Some of the beginning descriptions confused me until I stopped trying to visualize it like Game of Thrones, and instead visualized it like Eric the Red.

One aspect that I find most impressive about the book is how lean and focused the writing is. Let’s be honest: when was the last time you read a great fantasy book that didn’t require a six month’s leave of absence to finish? Half a King is fit and trim. There is only one point of view, characters come and go, and the plot moves quickly. There were so many scenes that could have been explored, but Abercrombie only tackles what it right and what is necessary. And so the book feels focused. It’s fantastic.

The other reason I find this book so appealing is because I can’t think of another YA author writing in this non-magical fantasy setting. Most other YA fantasy books are bursting (sometimes stupidly so) with magic and flighty fantasy: Harry Potter, Eragon, The Lightning Thief all come to mind. But Abercrombie has created a mature fictional world. It comes with normal men and women who kill or are killed, who beat or are beaten, who cheat or are cheated, who do what they must to survive. It is fascinating and heartbreaking to watch good characters try to navigate this gray and murky place.

As YA fantasy lit, the novel is new and fresh. Don’t worry if you found Abercrombie too vulgar, violent or lewd in the past. Half a King dials down the sex and gore by many factors, but Harry Potter this ain't - people die and life is miserable, even if you do have traveling companions at your back. Half a King will appeal to a wide range of high schoolers and adults alike. The novel is intense and lean, immersive and visceral. There is no reason for you not to pick it up. This is Joe Abercrombie’s best book yet, and you will love it. I certainly did.

If you like generic Game of Thrones characters
By Toni
If you like generic Game of Thrones characters, you'll love, Yarvi (generic Tyrion) as he struggles to overcome his physical disability to get revenge for a murdered father ... he didn't seem to care about all that much ... for a crown ... he didn't seem to really want in the first place.
To be honest, I was excited to read about a main character with a physical obstacle, but after about five pages, I got tired of hearing how he has a short arm. Yes, I get it. He has a short arm, and he uses that as a crutch to never have to address his real flaws. It might have been better if instead of giving his character a mangled arm, the author might have given him a personality.
For people who liked Lawrence's "Broken Empire Series" you may love this book ... if you like lame revenge plots against weak uncle villains and whiny, underdeveloped main characters who travel around with flat, generic characters
The story is boring. The characters are boring. The plot is boring. The events are boring. Every conflict is either avoided or too quickly resolved as to kill all suspense, which is the blood of narrative. So what you get is a main character who almost confronts his uncle, who then falls conveniently to a fake out death, is taken prisoner as an oarsmen where he doesn't face a lot of conflict, just endless chapters of descriptions of rowing and other characters I couldn't care less about. No attempts to escape, no conflicts with crew. not even the obvious conflict of rowing with one f""ing arm. After that they end up on an island with flesh-eating savages where .. nothing much happens.
The fact that it was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, suggest that it wasn't a very good year for books. To be honest, it has been a struggle to find a good read recently. I was hoping this would be it. I assume the book can be read in a day or three. It took me several months because instead of not being able to put it down, I simply didn't want to pick it up.
