Qualitative Data Analysis: A Methods Sourcebook, by Matthew B. Miles, A. Michael Huberman, Johnny Saldaña

The Third Edition of Miles & Huberman's classic research methods text is updated and streamlined by Johnny Saldaa, author of The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers. Several of the data display strategies from previous editions are now presented in re-envisioned and reorganized formats to enhance reader accessibility and comprehension. The Third Edition’s presentation of the fundamentals of research design and data management is followed by five distinct methods of analysis: exploring, describing, ordering, explaining, and predicting. Miles and Huberman's original research studies are profiled and accompanied with new examples from Saldaa's recent qualitative work. The book's most celebrated chapter, "Drawing and Verifying Conclusions," is retained and revised, and the chapter on report writing has been greatly expanded, and is now called “Writing About Qualitative Research.” Comprehensive and authoritative, Qualitative Data Analysis has been elegantly revised for a new generation of qualitative researchers.

Review
"This book is a wonderful, valuable and truly important contribution to the field of qualitative research. Saldana has updated, innovated and altogether advanced the insights and wisdom of practice of Miles and Huberman in such a way as to amplify the value of their work while making it even more usable and inspiring to researchers concerned with engaging in rigorous, reflective, systematic and reliable empirical research. This book adds great value to the field of qualitative research and I will use it in all of my methods courses with great enthusiasm and appreciation. Thank you for your hard work, I am grateful!" (Sharon Ravitch)

"I definitely plan to adopt this edition when it becomes available. In recent years, this has been a text I encourage student to use as a reference. The new edition will be a required textbook for my Advanced Qualitative Research course." (Mary Madden)

“The new material is well integrated, it still has the Miles and Huberman content, but the presentation strategy adds new material and “softens” the quantitative edge of the Second Edition. I think the section on coding (Chapter 4) is an excellent presentation and surpasses similar material in Saldaa’s previous book. This book continues to be the best basic sourcebook available." (James H. Banning 2013-03-15)

"Yes, this is a much improved 3rd edition and I know my students will find it extremely valuable as a handbook, instructional guide, and day-to-day resource in their qualitative analysis activities." (Carolyn Garcia)

“All in all, the updated Sourcebook is an impressive accomplishment in preserving Miles and Huberman’s original vision while also moving research approaches forward with the changing demands of the field...Saldaa reorganized the Sourcebook with great care and according to Miles and Huberman’s five primary purposes of data display: to explore, describe, order, explain, and predict...With all its helpful updates, the new and improved Sourcebook provides an extensive overview and a range of practical applications of possible and ‘elusive’ qualitative data analysis methods (aimed primarily at textual data).”

(Elmar Hashimov, Ball State University)

Several of the data display strategies from the previous editions are retained and MHS [Miles, Huberman, and Saldana] presents them in reenvisioned and reorganized formats that will, I believe, enhance reader accessibility and comprehension...The book provides a display (p. 340), taken from the second edition, that illustrates an "overview of qualitative data analysis processes." The display is a concept map, starting with the research question and ending with the dissemination and use of the report. The bulk of MHS (Chapters 5–10) talks about what is in between these points. The concept map is complex and will be valuable for readers, whatever their level of coding experience. (Molly Engle, American Journal of Evaluation)

Pretty good book on qualitative data analysis
By Rachel in Washington
I've been pretty happy with this book -- clearly describes their recommended approach for analyzing qualitative data. In short, they are all about TABLES. They spend chapter after chapter presenting different variations on the types of tables you can use to summarize and analyze and draw connections in your qualitative data. I'm not totally sold on the need for tables if you're coding your data in NVivo anyway, but it's interesting to read this perspective and it seems like there could certainly be occasions when tables would make sense. Plus this book is considered seminal, so it's a good one to get and read.

The seventh edition of Plant Propagation: Principles and Practices continues the gradual reorganization and distribution in subject matter among the three active co-authors and the updating of biological concepts that underlie the practical application of the existing plant propagation technology.

The first edition in 1959 contains the following excerpt: "The study of plant propagation involves three different aspects. These may be considered as objectives in any course of study involving the propagation of plants. First of all, plant propagation requires a knowledge of mechanical manipulations and technical skills whose mastery requires a certain amount of practice and experience. This would include such things as how to bud or graft or how to make cuttings, etc. This is the art of propagation.

Secondly, successful plant propagation requires knowledge of plant growth and structure. This is the science of propagation. Some of this information can be learned empirically by working with the plants themselves, but it should be supplemented, if possible, with information gained from formal courses in botany, horticulture, plant physiology, and genetics. Such knowledge aids propagators in understanding why they do the things they do. It also makes it possible for them to better perform the practices.

A third important requirement of successful plant propagation is a knowledge of specific kinds of plants and the particular methods by which those plants must be propagated. To a large extent the method must be geared to the requirements of the particular kind of plant being propagated."

In preparing the seventh edition 42 years later we have maintained those same three objectives and, as much as possible, presented them in separate identified chapters as principles and practices although the order has changed somewhat. During the different editions, the amount of material has increased astronomically and the limits of scientific concepts and applicability have expanded beyond the wildest forecasts in 1959. Instead of simply piling more information onto previous information, we have tried to integrate new science and technology into the evolving pattern that characterizes the range from traditional to the present combination of science and technology.

First of all, we must recognize the revolutionary impact of biotechnology not only upon the concepts of biology but also its practical applications in the propagation industry. We have had a long enough history to see the historical continuity in the evolution of human progress and scientific advancement. Chapter 1 has remained intact as a historical account of how propagation activities have been a primary backdrop for human progress leading up to our present era. Chapter 2 has been almost completely rewritten to synthesize a comprehensive view of propagation from the standpoint of the gene and the epigenetic control of development. Biotechnology is introduced as three separate branches: (a) cell and tissue culture technology, (b) gene marker technology, and (c) recombinant gene technology. Cell and tissue culture technology, which includes all aseptic aspects of the culture of protoplasts, cells, tissues, shoot tips, embryos, etc., was introduced in the first edition by a section on embryo culture which expanded into a full chapter by the third edition. From there the subject was treated in dual chapters of principles and practices. In this edition, this section has remained intact but is reorganized and partly rewritten. This technology has not only found its place in commercial propagation but is an essential aspect of current genetic engineering. DNA marker-based technology is now coming into its own to directly identify cultivars and to study taxonomic relationships. The ability to sequence genes and to manipulate them in the laboratory has created an essentially new field of biology known as genomics which will have an increasing impact of propagation. After many years in the laboratory, recombinant DNA technology is now having an impact on human activities. Propagators will be increasingly faced with both its promise and its controversy. The topic is introduced in Chapter 2. The production of transgenic cultivars is described for seeds in Chapter 5 (Seed Selection) and for vegetatively propagated cultivars in Chapter 16 (Clones). However, students will need to go elsewhere for a comprehensive text on genetic engineering.

The engineering, computerization, and mechanization to control the propagation environment has continued to be a major aspect of the industry and of previous editions. Chapter 3 continues the integration of concepts and application.

Seed propagation has made major advances in both the understanding of seed biology and the technology of seedling production. These chapters have remained largely intact but considerable rewriting and reorganization has taken place. Chapter 5 has been almost completely reorganized, integrating the concepts of selection for annual and perennial plants together into a comprehensive analysis.

Chapters on vegetative propagation (cuttings, grafting, budding, layering, specialized roots and stems) follow next in sequence continuing the dual emphasis on principles and practices. The history of research on root initiation is reviewed.

The chapter on clonal propagation has been expanded into a comprehensive analysis of the concept of clones as taxonomic units in perennial crops, including their origin in horticulture and forestry and the potential for improvement through transgenic cultivars. Sources of variability (environmental, epigenetic, genetic, and pathogenic) in clonal propagation systems are described as well as their control in plant production systems. Emphasis is placed on selection and maintenance of sources that are genetically pure, true to type, and pathogen free.

One change that may be noted by previous users is renaming the title to: Hartmann and Kester's Plant Propagation: Principles and Practices. This is intended to maintain the identity with the original text initially created and maintained by the two original authors through four editions, an identity recognized by thousands of horticultural students.

We also recognize the need to increase the case by which students can identify key concepts and terminology of propagation. Each chapter opens with an introductory statement and specific objectives. We are using in-depth text boxes to separate more advanced topics or to highlight specific key terminology. Whenever a new term is introduced (shown in bold print), the definition is added in the margin of that page to produce a glossary of terms. An added feature to the seventh edition is a student CD supplement that includes expanded definitions and images for over 200 terms used in plant propagation. The CD is packaged free in the back of each new text and provides an interactive supplement to the text that allows students to see additional color images, animations, tutorials, and video clips related to propagation.

Additionally, a student support Web site is available at www.prenhall.com/hartmann. The Web site includes sample exam questions, giving students the opportunity to test their understanding of important course material.

An Instructor's Manual is available as an aid for using the text to teach plant propagation. It includes chapter overviews with sample test questions. The Instructor's Manual is available by contacting your local Prentice Hall representative.

We have added a number of new illustrations this time, including many replacements in Chapter 2.

We have begun to include many Web sites as references within the text. The web will continue to be an expanding resource.

In preparing the seventh edition of this book, we have depended upon the assistance of authorities in the various fields of propagation and related subjects. They gave their time most generously in reading sections of the manuscript and offering suggestions. We especially wish to thank: Sekar Arulsekar, Bill Barnes, Carol Baskin, D. Kim Black, Jack Buxton, Abhai Dandekar, John Day, Richard Durham, Kevin M. Fenning, Tom Gradziel, Jim Kamas, Ron Perry, Bill Proebsting, Larry Rupp, Jeff Sibley, John Tristan, Lawrence Virkaitis, Keith Warren, 'Philip Wilson, and Richard Zimmerman. The responsibility, however, for the final version of the edition is that of the authors.

We need to acknowledge the passing of individuals associated with this text. We dedicate this edition again to Dr. Hudson T. Hartmann. Also we note the death of Daphne Kester who has been associated with the production of this text for many years. She typed many of the early manuscripts. In addition she was a dedicated supporter and participant of the effort. We also thank our wives, Maritza Davies and Pat Geneve, and families for their support, encouragement, and patience during the writing and production of the seventh edition of this book. We thank Carolyn Cobb for preparing many of the illustrations used in this book.

Finally we acknowledge the skill and professionalism of the Prentice-Hall and associated editors who made this production possible: Debbie Yarnell, Lori Dalberg, Eileen O'Sullivan, and Carey Davies.

great resource
By moss dog
I'm a first year Horticulture student, and this is my text for Plant Prop. Almost all of the information I've read so far - a few hundred pages - is new to me. Hartmann et. al. do a great job of taking complex, unfamiliar information and expressing it simply and clearly, so that I understand. In the margins of every page, they break out and define important terms, making it very easy to locate definitions when I need them. There are frequent boxes with "in depth" information that more fully explores concepts brought up in the general narrative.

There's also a CD-Rom dictionary, which is helpful, although I find the access is a bit cumbersome - click on a letter, wait for it to open a list, click on a word (if the word you want is there - many of the ones I wanted to find are not included), wait for it to open the definition & picture, then click back to the first page. If it were simply searchable - if I could type in a word without clicking through the various screens - I'd use it more. It's a nice bonus, though, and they didn't have to include anything at all so it seems unfair to rate the book based on the accessibility of the disc contents.

I will say this book would be most useful in tandem with practical labs that explore the concepts and offer the chance to experience what is in the text. I'm taking my class as an independent study, and I find it is very challenging to teach myself all of this material without the benefit of labs, even though my advisor is excellent and always available for my questions. I generally read the text at least twice and often four times, because it's so intense that I don't catch everything on the first run. I plan to try some of the techniques myself, once I gather the supplies I'll need; I think this will make all the difference in my true understanding and retention of what I've read about, and my advisor agrees.

To instructors, I'd say to just be aware that even though the information is presented gently, it's still a lot for a new student to take in, and even the most conscientious student can get overwhelmed by a 100-page reading assignment. It's too much. Break it up, work in some labs, and really encourage discussion to make it come alive. In that context, I can't imagine a better text to use for teaching Plant Prop.

Shiny and New

I was requried to get this edition for a plant propagation class (go figure) and I already owned a previous edition (the 3rd?) This book is wonderful. Great resource. I highly recommend it to anyone in the hort field who needs to propagate, so almost everyone!

This book has lost its focus
By Margaret Norton
I was looking forward to the new edition of this classic, but I have to say that I'm really disappointed. It's marketed as an undergraduate textbook in plant propagation (which is how I'm using it), but the content is more suited to students with a background including plant physiology and biochemistry, rather than just an introductory plant biology course, which is what my students have. I can understand the authors' desire to make this the definitive textbook on plant propagation, but including details on biochemistry and molecular biology most often obscures the important, basic points. For example, the whole-page figure (p. 17) on the stages of meiosis shows the stages of meiosis, but does not specify that the reduction division is the first division (the information is there, but you have to read closely to find it). Contrast that with the 5th edition, which states outright that the reduction division occurs first and skips details of anaphase I, etc. This may seem petty, but in my class, students got lost in the details and missed the major point of meiosis. Worse, when it comes to growth regulators, the students simply lost interest in wading through the details to get any information.
I think this edition would be improved by two things: first, skip the "lit review" style of the text and return to a simple narrative emphasizing the basic points of plant propagation. Second, move the details to a separate area of the book, either at the end of each chapter or as Part 2 of the book. For example, a short narrative section explaining each of the growth regulators might be followed by an "in depth" section which cites research relevant to growth regulators in plant propagation. Instructors who teach undergrads could assign reading based on the narrative sections, while instructors with more advanced classes (or students who are interested in learning more) could assign the more detailed sections as well. It's either that or create two books.
My students are simply not reading this book, which is a shame. My older edition is one of the most tattered books on my bookshelf because I reach for it so often.

Come, Holy Spirit: Sermons, by Karl Barth

Synopsis: "These sermons were prepared from 1920 to 1924. Professor Barth preached some of them while he was minister of the Reformed congregation in Safenwil, Canton Aargau, Switzerland; others in the Reformed Church in Goettingen while he was professor of theology in the University. Pastor Thurneysen at that time preached to the congregation in Bruggen, near St. Gall, Switzerland. The sermons were written not for special occasions but for the regular Sunday morning service, and were addressed to such men and women as one will find in any village or city church--to men and women in the struggle for life, waiting and seeking for God. "Pastor Thurneysen selected the sermons and arranged them according to a scheme that may be indicated by the words Promise, Christ, Christian Living." --from the Translator's Preface Author Biography: Karl Barth (1886-1968) the Swiss Reformed professor and pastor, was once described by Pope Pius XII as the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas. As principal author of The Barmen Declaration, he was the intellectual leader of the German Confessing Church--the Protestant group that resisted the Third Reich. Barth's teaching career spanned nearly ve decades. Removed from his post at Bonn by the Nazis in late 1934, Barth moved to Basel where he taught until 1962. Among Barth's many books, sermons, and essays are the Epistle to the Romans, Humanity of God, Evangelical Theology, and Church Dogmatics. Eduard Thurneysen (1888-1974) was a pastor in a Swiss town near where Barth was pastor, and they worked out dialectical theology together. He was later Professor of Theology at Zurich."

They cannot be easily comprehended, because they are so different in form ...
By David L. Carroll
The Translators' Preface states in part "These sermon's are not popular, clever, eloquent pulpit discourses such as the modern audience is accustomed to hear and to applaud. They probably would not receive large space in an American Monday morning newspaper. They cannot be easily comprehended, because they are so different in form and content from any sermons that have ever been published in this or any other age. They must be read and pondered, reread and pondered again, until the truth in them becomes spirit and life in the reader."

I have found this to be my experience and it is one of my must treasured books.

It serves a function within the whole, but does not deliver in KB's typical ability to teach and edify at once. These thoughts just don't sparkle in the way Barth is won't to sparkle.

Building a Scalable Data Warehouse with Data Vault 2.0, by Dan Linstedt, Michael Olschimke

The Data Vault was invented by Dan Linstedt at the U.S. Department of Defense, and the standard has been successfully applied to data warehousing projects at organizations of different sizes, from small to large-size corporations. Due to its simplified design, which is adapted from nature, the Data Vault 2.0 standard helps prevent typical data warehousing failures.

"Building a Scalable Data Warehouse" covers everything one needs to know to create a scalable data warehouse end to end, including a presentation of the Data Vault modeling technique, which provides the foundations to create a technical data warehouse layer. The book discusses how to build the data warehouse incrementally using the agile Data Vault 2.0 methodology. In addition, readers will learn how to create the input layer (the stage layer) and the presentation layer (data mart) of the Data Vault 2.0 architecture including implementation best practices. Drawing upon years of practical experience and using numerous examples and an easy to understand framework, Dan Linstedt and Michael Olschimke discuss:

  • How to load each layer using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), including automation of the Data Vault loading processes.
  • Important data warehouse technologies and practices.
  • Data Quality Services (DQS) and Master Data Services (MDS) in the context of the Data Vault architecture.

  • Provides a complete introduction to data warehousing, applications, and the business context so readers can get-up and running fast
  • Explains theoretical concepts and provides hands-on instruction on how to build and implement a data warehouse
  • Demystifies data vault modeling with beginning, intermediate, and advanced techniques
  • Discusses the advantages of the data vault approach over other techniques, also including the latest updates to Data Vault 2.0 and multiple improvements to Data Vault 1.0

Comprehensive Data Vault 2.0 reference manual
By M. Ferle
This book fills a huge void in Data Vault 2.0 resources. It covers everything about data vault, including data modeling, ETL processing, error handling, metadata, data quality and more, all explained in depth with sufficient examples that can be immediately put to use. Every question that I could think of relating to data vault is covered in the book. It is an excellent reference manual to have on hand while doing data vault implementations.

That said, I gave the book only four stars because there is always room for improvement. I was disappointed after reading Chapter 3, about the Data Vault 2.0 methodology. It appears that the authors threw in a bunch of various methodologies, frameworks, best practices and approaches without clearly explaining how all these parts fit together into a cohesive methodology.

The authors appear out of their depth in the project management space. They incorrectly apply the term PMP (Project Management Professional, a certification from the Project Management Institute) as a best practice. What they probably meant is that the project management aspect of the Data Vault 2.0 methodology is taken from the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), a project management standard issued by the Project Management Institute.

I also don’t see why the authors included Scrum in the mix. The explanation of how Scrum is applied in mini-waterfall sprints is confusing and contradicting. For example, it is not clear how the Scrum roles such as scrum master and product owner translate into the mini-waterfall sprints. They state that Scrum is used for team coordination/team organization and that the team is self-organized while at the same time they designate the project manager as the person who plans the tasks within a mini-waterfall sprint. It is contradicting that on one hand the product owner participates in the sprints on a daily basis while on the other hand there is no user involvement during the development part of a sprint. In my opinion it would have been better to forget Scrum and just use the Agile Manifesto and its principles in order to bring agile thinking into the Data Vault 2.0 methodology.

Not your daddy's data warehouse!
By Kent Graziano
Full disclosure: I am a huge Data Vault fan and did help with the earlier books (but not this one). This is the Data Vault book everyone has been clamoring for for years. We finally have a book that not only teaches you how to model a Data Vault but also shows you how to load data into a DV as well as how to build Information Marts on top of it to pull the data out for reporting. This book covers the full life cycle of developing an enterprise data warehouse in an agile manner using the Data Vault method. And to top it off, this book has all the details for the enhancements that came with Data Vault 2.0. This book is to Data Vault what Dr. Kimball's Data Warehouse Lifecycle book was to dimensional modeling. If oyu can only buy on data warehouse book this year - get this one.

The most detailed and complete data vault book ever written!
By Number2
Finally, a Data Vault book that has everything you need from end-to-end to build a data vault warehouse from the ground up!

I've read the Supercharge Your Data Warehouse book from Dan, I've read all of Hans Hultgren's books, I've read and watched DV fundamentals training material, and I never really felt like I fully understood everything end to end. I grasped the big picture and was excited about the possibilities, but working alone after all of that I felt like I still didn't really have the tools I needed to complete a data vault on my own. With this book, I finally do!

This book takes you from concepts to implementation, from beginning to end. There are actual screen shots of how to create databases, what indexes to put on your vault tables, how to create an SSIS package, TSQL code, Master Data Services and Data Quality Services examples, there's MDX code, all of it. And it's not just details to get you to a data vault and then leaving you on your own to figure out the info marts, this takes you all the way to putting data in your dimension and fact tables.

All in all, this is the most complete Data Vault book that's ever been created and it's a fantastic value for the money. It's like 684 pages. Once I started, it was literally 8 hours a day for 4-5 days of plowing through all the information and going back and re-reading and getting more details out of it before I was done. It's not a book you can just flip through in a couple of hours. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in data vault or data warehousing in general.

From Publishers Weekly
Browne's experience as managing director of investment firm Tweedy, Browne provides examples to support his lessons on value investing, a method of buying stocks that have fallen in price to earn the best return over the long term. Browne uses examples from successful investors (such as Benjamin Graham, Walter Schloss and Warren Buffet) to illustrate that value investing is the best way to make the most of one's investments. The zingy chapters titles ("Buy Stocks like Steaks...On Sale," "Around the World with 80 Stocks" and "Sifting out the Fool's Gold") are demonstrative of his penchant for metaphors, parables and anecdotes, which make this book as entertaining as it is informative. Browne's short chapters detail useful and time-tested concepts, including the significance of book value, which foreign economies are worth investing in, and who to watch for investment ideas. With detailed advice and thorough explanations, this book should prove an asset to both professional and amateur investors.

From the Inside Flap

Do you care about your money? Then spend a little time with Christopher Browne to understand what investing is all about so you can do a better job of investing.

There are many ways to make money in today's market, but the one strategy that has truly proven itself over the years is value investing. Value investing consists of buying the stock of companies that trade for less than their intrinsic value to profit from their long-term performance. Value investing works. It has produced superior investment results to any other strategy. Best of all, it is easy to understand. As Warren Buffett has said, no more than 125 IQ points are needed. Any more and they are wasted.

Author Christopher Browne has been a part of Tweedy, Browne Company—the oldest value investing firm on Wall Street, which has counted Benjamin Graham among its clients—for more than thirty years, and over the course of his career, he has successfully followed the value approach to investment management, buying bargain stocks around the world.

Now, with The Little Book of Value Investing, he translates this wealth-building strategy in a way that any investor can understand and apply to investing all over the globe. You will learn how to buy stocks like steaks—on sale—no matter where they are sold; how to put your money to work like a banker; and how to buy $1 for 66 cents. Browne's ideas can help prevent you from losing money by spotting false bargains. Most importantly, he clearly illuminates the first rule of investing: don't lose money.

The beauty of value investing is its logical simplicity. Within these pages, high-caliber value manager Christopher Browne illustrates how to identify the "sales flyers," the market offers to profit, while avoiding bubbles and manias. This little book is a treasure trove of insight. In addition to teaching you how to uncover value stocks, you'll also learn how to:

  • Give the companies you invest in a physical
  • Send your stocks to the Mayo Clinic for a checkup with a sixteen-point checklist
  • Find a specialist
  • Stay the course and stay away from fleeting fads

Written in a straightforward and engaging manner, The Little Book of Value Investing will help you to understand and implement one of the most effective investment strategies ever created.

A great introduction to value investing
By Befragt
In the interest of full disclosure, it's best I state that I've been an extremely satisfied investor in the Tweedy Browne Global Value Fund for over a decade. The fund never does outstandingly well, but it also very seldom loses money. Over time, my initial investment has done surprisingly well.

This book should not surprise anyone who has read Tweedy Browne's shareholder letters, but it does a great job of synthesizing Tweedy Browne's investment philosophy, while also providing more in-depth discussion of how to research stocks and understand financial statements.

Chris Browne is a Benjamin Graham disciple, and his firm was labeled as on of the "Superinvestors of Graham and Doddsville" by Warren Buffett. This book might be characterized as a shorter, more readable version of Graham's "The Intelligent Investor."

It's important for anyone who might buy this book to understand what it is, and what it is not. This is a primer on value investing as applied to individual equities, not an in-depth treatise on how to invest, allocate assets, etc. The goal of this book is to show why value investing works, how it works, and how to implement an investing process. It does not, nor is it intended to, provide in-depth discussion about how to value companies or financial statements or how to assess competition. Keep in mind that this is a 180-page book that takes 2-3 hours to read.

Experienced investors might find parts of this book to be somewhat basic. However, starting with the chapter entitled "Sifting Out the Fool's Gold," it really imparts a lot of information that everybody should know (in that case, how to tell if a stock that meets screening criteria is really a value stock or a dud). The chapters about financial statement analysis and how to analyze a company's future prospects were well-written and provide an outstanding roadmap to analyzing a company that even more experienced investors would do well to heed.

The 16-point checklist in Chapter 14 ("Send Your Stocks to the Mayo Clinic") is an excellent way of examining a company to determine its competitive position and future prospects. In my opinion, that checklist and the related discussion alone are worth the price of the book.

The discussion on insider buying and selling was particularly interesting. Although this is part of many investor's decisions, the book demonstrates just how important insider buying can be as a value signal. I intend to pay more attention to insider buying as a result.

One particularly interesting aspect of this book is its discussion of international value investing. That overview should provide investors with examples of why value exists overseas, but most investors probably can't master the intricacies of non-US accounting methods.

This is a great book for less-experienced investors, and contains a number of nuggets that may be of use to even highly experienced investors. Readers who want a more depth might like Martin Whitman's two books or "Security Analysis" by Graham. However, these books can be tough reads, and for novice investors this book is a great place to start. Other good reads for investors are Joel Greenblatt's "You can be a stock market genius" and Dreman's "Contrarian Investing: the Next Generation."

Good advice but examine track record
By P. Heneghan
If you are new to value investing this book covers the basics. The research on the outperformance of value investing is well documented and if you follow the advice in this book you will do well in your stock investments.

I was curious how the Tweedy Browne mutual funds peformed though so I went to their web site. In each period - 1, 3, 5, 10 and since inception, the returns after taxes on distributions of the Tweedy Browne American Value have failed to beat the S&P 500 index or the Russell 2000 index. When I started investing 10 years ago I read a lot of books by many authors without checking their record first. And, as a result I made a lot of expensive mistakes. Just something to keep in mind when choosing whose advice to listent to!

I still give this book 4 stars because I believe the author gives sounds advice. However I would recommend "The Essays of Warren Buffett, Lessons for Corporate America", the classic "The Intelligent Investor" by Ben Graham, and "Contrarian Investment Strategies in the Next Generation" by David Dreman.

Author's effort: 4 stars, Reader's gain: 2 stars...
By Jack Reader
Unfortunately, this book has to follow the amusing and rewarding "Little Book" of Joel Greenblatt in Wiley's series. Therefore, unfavorable and perhaps unfair comparison is unavoidable. I do respect the experience and attempt of Christopher H. Browne to write a small book on value investing, but I feel he comes up short. If it was a friendly talk at a club you could find it mildly entertaining, but if you are looking for value, well...

First, value investing is not a strategy where a magic formula or a magic list could break an entirely new ground. Yet alone a "Little Book". You read just one value investing book and "Buy Stocks On Sale", "Margin of Safety", "First, Do Not Lose Money", "Second, Do Not Lose Money" pretty much become recurring and familiar ideas. There is no magic ratio, magic anything in analyzing income statements, earnings predictions, book value etc, it takes hard, thorough work, experience, patience and knowledge. You have to know what to know. You have to know what and where to look at. You have to know why. You have to know what, how and where numbers can be altered with GAAP or else. In this regard a reader could have expected at least a general(novel?)framework, a way of thinking instead of the presented essay-type, list-type ("I also look at...") writing. Or, like in Joel Greenblatt's book, we could have been entertained with a "Jason's Gum Shop"-type metaphore/concept.

Second, a reader of this book is either a convert and firm believer of value investing (Buffett, Munger, Fisher books pack the shelf), looking for additional ideas, NEW concepts or aspects and will find nothing new here. Or, the reader is a beginner or a freshly burned growth (hype)investor entertaining a fresh start and will be turned down by a dry, uninspiring, unexciting, somewhat disorganized book. Quite possibly this reader gives up, will leave this book unfinished and subscribes to yet another advisory service or dumps her/his money into an index or mutual fund. That is, not many readers would be enriched here.

Third, value investing is truly a winning strategy. So do not give up or get discouraged by this book. (Phil Town, David Dreman, Mary Buffett, Philip A. Fisher are good starts.)
