This is an excellent book. It is easy to understand and follow as a beginner and will definitely help the well seasoned graphic artist. I only needed it for a class but this is one text book that I will not be selling back!

Susan Morrow is surprised to hear from her former husband Edward, who has written a novel entitled Nocturnal Animals , which he asks her to read. The main character in the novel is Tony Hastings, who, in a late-night drive with his family from Ohio en route to Maine takes a detour down a dark road into death, confused grief and vengeance. As Susan becomes involved in Tony's journey, she relives her past life with Edward and reviews her present one with her current husband, Arnold--both men she could never "read" the way she reads Tony. She finds herself asking two questions: how will Tony survive his trip's terrible events, and what sort of a man has Edward become? And because Edward is "real" and Tony is fictional, only her speculations about Tony will be answered to her satisfaction. Written in contrasting styles--Tony's account in sharp prose that ricochets in unexpected directions, Susan's musings in fluid passages of emotional and sensory perceptions--the novel's two stories mesh into a credible, suspenseful narrative. Wright infuses this excellent work with resonating observations about the reality of violence, where the loss of humanity is the price of revenge, and the "reality" of fiction and its place and power in day-to-day life. By framing a crime story within a domestic novel, Wright, an English professor and author of three previous novels, dissolves the fragile civility that often conceals violence. He also scrutinizes the institution of marriage, considers the nature of memory, and documents the potential impact of one's choices, both large and small--all without sacrificing pace. At Edward Sheffield's request, Susan Morrow reads his first novel, Nocturnal Animals , in which an impulsive change of plan delivers Tony Hastings and his family into the hands of strangers who terrorize them. Passages from Sheffield's novel alternate between Susan's memories of Sheffield (her ex-husband), to details of her current marriage, to her speculations about the writer's and the reader's obligations. By counterpoising the eroding compromises of Susan's daily life with the sufferings of the Hastings family, Wright demonstrates that macho posturing, cruelty, and the refusal of individual responsibility infect both sexes and all classes. Twenty-five years ago, Susan Sheffield divorced her ineffectual husband Edward to marry heart surgeon Arnold Morrow. Now that Edward's asked her to read the novel he's finished, she's pulled into it in disturbing ways other readers may not fully share. Not that Edward's novel, Nocturnal Animals, isn't disturbing in its own right as it unfolds the story of Tony Hastings, an Ohio professor--like real-life novelist Wright (The Morley Mythology, 1977, etc.)--whose trip to his Maine summer home with his wife Laura and daughter Helen is disastrously interrupted by a carload of louts who force him off the road, separate him from Laura and Helen, drive him for miles, and abandon him alone in the middle of backwoods Pennsylvania. Lt. Bobby Andes, leading the search for the women the following day, inevitably find them raped and murdered, and Tony sinks into an apathetic fog from which he never fully emerges--despite a return to his job, a few fumbling attempts at resuming his sex life, and two calls from Andes asking him to come back east for a police lineup. The first time, infuriatingly, Tony can't make an identification, but the second time, he does identify a suspect, setting in motion the engine of his final calamitous return to life. Reading Tony's adventures over three nights, Susan feels herself slipping imperceptibly into an identification with his sense of death- in-life, reviewing her life since Edward--her first adulterous fling with Arnold, her brisk parting from Edward, the hollowness of her careful life since--and feeling uncomfortably called to account. Because the melodramatic novel-within-a-novel is so much more arresting than the subtle, ambiguous frame story, even readers who find Susan's reactions more fervently invoked than convincingly demonstrated will find much of interest here. Must read before film

I recently read that Nocturnal Animals was getting a Dec 2016 release date in theatres. I then found it was based upon this book Tony and Susan. This book reads as a story within a story. Susan has been asked to read a novel recently written by her ex husband Edward. We read this novel along with her as we also learn about her life with Edward and her current husband Arnold. I true page turner. I could say more, but don't want to spoil it. Now that this is finished I can't wait for the film. I also rated 4 stars because I've never given 5 stars to any book. All have some things we like and things we don't. Enjoy!!

A Waste of Time

I purchased this book based on what I expected to be a stellar story purchased to be an interesting movie of murder and self recognition of the writer's former life. The initial story was bearable yet poorly written. As for the rest of the book, I cannot imagine a further waste of time reading, and as for the screen I shiver to think this is what our top talents are signing up to produce.

There's nothing in this short little book that I haven't read in at least a dozen other books, and there's not a lot of explanation for most points. It's not a bad book - just OK.

An Important, Meaningful Book for How I Present My Business

For me, this was an excellent choice! I have a small company in a similar market as the author, so I thought it could apply to how I am looking to grow our company and present and brand our business. I have been struggling with many of the approaches that are typically recommended in many sales books. I have been wanting to sync up how I present my business with my values and avoid the "methods" that are used to convince buyers to do business with me. Dan's process and insights are, in my case, an affirmation that I can move forward with an approach that should help me grow my business, but also on my terms.
The book is brief, easy-to-read, and very specific in how it ties the sales process to your life - that the two do not have to be separate. Also, I found the author to be refreshingly candid in presenting his story. Finally, the book has helped me rework how I will present what my firm does and the principles of our business model.

Read before & after major surgery or Illness. Keeps your spirits up!

I watched the show & thought it was hysterical. When I had to have major surgery I purchased the book. I read this before & after surgery. Although after surgery I had to put it down because it hurt to laugh. I was in a very sad place in a sad situation. I would pick up the book & let it take me away. I would be with Karl on one of his adventures or misadventures. I would actually laugh out loud, really loud! & have nurses ask me what I was reading. This was in Pittsburgh, Pa. No one had heard of An Idiot Abroad. I am so glad it is coming out on DVD. My favorite aunt is in Florida & had a stroke. She is unable to read the book but I have read parts to her. I will being going down to stay with her for a couple of months in early 2012. I am definitely taking the DVD with me so she will be able to see Karl's expressions throughout his journeys. This book has been incredibly therapeutic for myself & others I have turned into Karl fans. I also enjoy Ricky's animated radio show which I would have never watched if it was not for this book.

HILARIOUS! A must for Gervais/Pilkington/Merchant fans!

I haven't finished the book yet, but it is absolutely hilarious so far! If you enjoy anything these guys do, and can't get enough of Karl's logic (or lack thereof!), this book is for you. I have watched some of the show that this book is based on (it's only on in the UK right now, but can be found online). It's one of the funniest shows ever.

About the Author
David Mattson is CEO and a partner at Sandler Systems, Inc., an international training and consulting organization, where he continues to be a trainer and business consultant for management, sales, interpersonal communication, corporate team building, and strategic planning worldwide. He is also the author of The Sandler Rules: 49 Timeless Selling Principles and How to Apply Them, and coauthor of Five Minutes with VITO: Making the Most of Your Selling Time with the Very Important Top Officer.

Bruce Seidman is president and a partner at Sandler Systems, Inc., where he works closely with Sandler trainers to help them grow, using technology to share best practices across the entire global team. He carries on the legacy that his father, David Sandler, began in 1967.

Great self-help book for salesman and everyone else.

This is an easy to read book, i finished it in a 4 hour flight. Half of the insights are common knowledge, but the other half are very interesting. Here are some samples of the interesting insights:

The idea of the separation of inner and outer world was presented in an easy to understand analogy. No one can enter your castle without your permission, we are hurt if we allow our outer world hurt us.

Few people are winners and few are real losers, but "at-leasters" are the worst kind of us. The Mr. and Mrs. Average. Those who are not great but not losers too. Beware of this zone, which has hit so many of us without recognizing it.

We are affected with 3 tapes: Parents tape, who either critical or nurturing; Child tape, that craves within us being childish all the while, and the adult tape, which is the most logical and correct.

Attitude, Behavior, and Technique are the 3 elements that create our own success.

How can we use all these insights to our advantage? Read the book.

Sandler Success Principles is stuff that works

A great new book from the David and Bruce was released today. I got an advanced copy, and read it straight through over the weekend.

This book is the perfect companion to the other teachings. If you haven't read the rules book or the bike book, then pick those up too.

Overall, David and Bruce teach you to improve your communication and sales skills by improving 3 areas, your attitude, your behavior, and your technique. This book is all about attitude. How do you keep yourself in the right frame of mind so that you can communicate clearly and get the successful results you want, consistently over time.

Their other books will tell you how to be successful. This book will tell you why you will be successful. These crucial insights are often the determining factor between success and failure. It not what you say or how you say it. It's about why you said it, and where your head and heart were at when you said it.

It is a heady concept, but just read the book. It is an easy read and well worth your time. Then take the action steps and make them a part of your routine and system for continuous and long term success.

Good easy read very good concepts

Good easy read very good concepts...Having never been exposed to Sandler I though I would give this a try first. I have been in sales professionally for over 20 years and read a ton of books on the subject as well as having taken training courses. There is new information/concepts that I was able to learn from and that were new to me and that was refreshing considering most sales books on the market are re-hashing of the same material and just packaged differently.

GARY B. HEMPHILL, PhD, PE, has more than thirty years of experience in the domestic and international construction industry. He has served as the project manager, designer, estimator, construction manager, field engineer, tunnel/shaft engineer, and project engineer on major projects throughout the world, including the Dallas Area Rapid Transit rail extension and the Taiwan High Speed Rail Project. He is the author of Blasting Operations.

Excellent resource for students, civil engineers, and tunnel engineers

I have recently had the opportunity to read and review this new book, Practical Tunnel Construction. I found it to be an easy to understand overview of pretty much all aspects of tunneling. It covers basic geology and, more importantly, engineering geology as it relates to tunneling in both hard rock and soft ground. The book then describes tunnel construction including equipment used for mining, mucking, grouting, blasting, ventilation, and ground support. Throughout the book, historical tidbits add color and interest. For example, I had never known about the massive sapping operation on the Messines Line in World War I.

I think that this book will be a terrific resource for students, civil engineers, and tunnel engineers. For college students, this would be an excellent textbook for an introductory tunnel engineering class as a civil engineering elective or as a step into a tunnel engineering program. If I were to teach such a class, this would certainly be my textbook. For civil engineers specializing in other branches of our profession, this book would provide a quick way to get up to speed with tunneling concepts and terminology. Practical Tunnel Construction is a must read for government engineers that are about to have a tunnel constructed in their city. Finally, I must disagree with the author's introductory statement that this book is not written for his peers. While I did not discover much new information, I found this book to be a very helpful resource in my work. Dr. Hemphill has pulled together key parts of many current and classic texts that I refer to time and again. Thanks to his documentation, I can easily find certain graphs, tables, and figures that guide me to the more detailed source books in my collection.
