About the Author

Larry Christensen, Ph.D., is currently chair of the psychology department at the University of South Alabama.� Prior to accepting his current position, he was at Texas A&M University where he progressed through the ranks from Assistant to Full Professor.� While at Texas A&M University, he served as director of graduate studies and developed a program of research focusing on the relationship between food and mood with a focus of attention on depression.� He continues this program of research at University of South Alabama but has also expanded into the area of food cravings.� Dr. Christensen has published approximately 70 scholarly research articles with the primary focus being the food-mood relationship.� He has also authored or co-authored five books focusing on research methods, psychological statistics and the effect of food on mood.� In addition to these accomplishments, he has served as past president of Southwestern Psychological Association, received the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar of the year award in 2001, served as a National Academy of Science study group member, was a consultant to the Texas Department of Mental Health-Mental Retardation, Research consultant to Procter and Gamble Co., and was a committee judge for the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize.

R. Burke Johnson, Ph.D.,is a research methodologist. He is a Professor in the Department of Professional Studies, at the University of South Alabama. He holds three masters degrees (psychology, sociology, and public policy). His Ph.D. is from the REMS Program (Research, Evaluation, Measurement, and Statistics) at the University of Georgia. He is author or coauthor of numerous articles and chapters, and was recently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. He was guest editor of a special issue on mixed methods research in the journal Research in the Schools (available at http://www.msera.org/rits_131.htm ) �and is currently guest editor of a forthcoming special issue on this topic for the American Behavioral Scientist. He is also working with Paul Vogt on the 4th edition of the Sage Dictionary of Statistics and Methodology.

Lisa A. Turner, Ph.D.,is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Alabama. Her Ph.D. is from the Experimental Psychology Program at the University of Alabama. This book is a "must-have" for doctoral candidates. It's a statistics book within a research methodologies book so it contains a truck-load of information. Not an easy read, but unbeatable as a reference.

A Helpful "life-and-times" of Jane Austen

This review was originally written for the hardcover edition, but on the assumption that this is fairly similar, I'll repeat it here.

This book is a Companion in the sense that it attempts to give the reader context for reading Austen's work, not in the sense of a reference work listing all her characters, etc. It is perfect for anyone beginning to read Austen's works, especially if they have little knowledge of the era. It would also be helpful as a basic guide to the late Georgian period, which is the setting of so many historical and romance novels.

Ross starts off with a brief (44 page) biography, followed by 8 chapters on the era: "The Common Daily Routine", "Of Lovers and Husbands", "Politics and Public Events", etc. In each, Ross discusses the era in general terms, and also relates the topic to Austen's life and writings. I read the book straight through, but it appears that each chapter could stand on its own: information is sometimes repeated if it relates to more than one topic. Lydia Bennett's finding ornaments in a book store is mentioned in both "The Present Fashions" and "The Subject of Books."

There are numerous plates of well-chosen pictures relating to both Jane Austen's personal life and the era in general.

There are no notes, but there is a helpful, but admittedly not exhaustive bibliography and an unusually detailed index. This index isn't perfect, it only lists one of the references to Lydia mentioned above, but it is much more thorough and in depth than most indexes, and helpfully has little notes after some of the entries that may be enough in themselves to refresh the reader's memory.

Overpriced, not enough content

Simonoff's text is at best an overview of the methods in non-parametric kernel smoothing techniques as of its writing. However, the text is very short, and omits any sort of aids to actually understand how some of the asymptotic properties were derived, for which outside sources are required. This was particularly troublesome as before hand I had never done any asymptotic expansions, so not seeing how it was done was confusing without class lectures or supplementary texts. In the later category, Hansen's nonparametric lecture notes and Qi Li's "Nonparametric Econometrics," seem to cover mostly the same material while not omitting so much detail. On these grounds, I would rate the book at best a 2/5 stars.

HOWEVER, Simonoff does have interesting "extra tidbits," at the end of each chapter which discuss non-trivial extensions, additional work, and history that is not covered in some of the supplementary materials mentioned above, and is a unique addition to some of the other statistical reference and text books I've bought recently, for which the book gets an additional star. However, almost on pure content grounds I am still stuck between removing it for being charged $180+ for the text.

This book is very good. The motivation for the issues on nonparametric methods a excellent. The only reason why I haven't given it 5 stars is that I would like to see more precise proofs.

Beautiful Book for a Great Price

This book is beautifully illustrated and certainly serves as a great atlas. It is organized by body system with a brief section on the normal physiology of that system and then entries for various conditions of that system. The index references page numbers, but the there are tables of contents for each color-coded system section organized by chapter number boldly displayed in the upper corners of the page. Thus, it is quite easy to find a lot of helpful information.

I will quibble a bit with the choice of what to exclude. There is not a word about seizure disorders. At first I thought that might be because the author chose to include conditions for which there can be lots of photos, imaging studies and drawings. But the chapter on neurodiagnostic tests does show a couple of EEC tracings and mentions EEG's utility in diagnosing conditions other than seizures. Then there's a chapter on diabetes insipidus that just has a diagram, so the graphics theory goes. Thus, I find it inexplicable that there's nothing about seizures.

Still, an interesting and useful reference, perhaps as a companion to Ferri's Clinical Adviser (or to my preference, The 5-Minute Clinical Consult).

A unique and useful approach to learning medicine

This reference is always open in my house when I'm studying. I flip back and forth between uptodate and this, or Cecil's and this, or "insert other nerdy medical text" and this. The descriptions of presentation of illness along with the variety of clinical images really solidify disease concepts and differentials into my mind. The chapters are brief yet thorough and laid out in bullet point form.

For instance I was able to SEE all the presentations of "multiple lung nodules/masses," each disease/syndrome/etc presented with unique identifiers for nailing the right ailment. It took about 30 minutes to do. EASY. Thats what I need.

After flipping through black, white, and gray text this book loaded with pictures, graphs, flow charts, and all other sorts of useful images deserves a place in any serious student's library. I don't know if this book will make me a better physician but it sure makes learning all this stuff much easier and far more entertaining.

About the Author
Tim Ernst is Arkansas' Wilderness Photographer. He has been hiking, driving and crawling around the wonderful Ozark Mountains for most of his life, preserving the images he sees on film for everyone to enjoy. His photographs have appeared in hundreds of national, regional and local publications. Some of his credits include National Geographic, Audubon, Backpacker, Outside, Outdoor Photographer, American Hiker, Natural History, Country, Chevy Outdoors, and Arkansas Times magazines, Sierra Club and Hallmark calendars, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service maps and brochures, Readers Digest Books, and The New York Times. Much of his time these days is spent teaching digital photography workshops in the Buffalo River Wilderness.

Ernst is the source for Arkansas and the surrounding area. Will not replace serious maps, but on this well-marked trail we were fine without them.

Sweet Arkansas hiking...

Very detailed. Sometimes a little too much rambling but definitely a great book to have. It was really beneficial to read ahead a time to help plan length of hikes each day, especially when starting in Oklahoma side since the trail is not as well marked on that end. I then took just the portion I needed for my 82 mile hike that I did this past summer. Looking forward to doing another section this upcoming year and will definitely be using this book over and over.

Comprehensive and practical ESL/EFL teacher's guide to L1 interference

For identifying the many types of interference from an ESL/EFL learner's L1 language, I have yet to find any book as comprehensive & useful as Learner English. Be aware that there is little, if any, content related to strategies for --correcting-- L1 interference; this is not that kind of book. For advice on how to improve your ESL/EFL learner's pronunciation & grammar you will need to look elsewhere.

A note to teachers of American (and other varieties of) English: as an imprint of Cambridge University Press, it should come as no surprise that the the pronunciation comparisons in this book are made with respect to British English. There is a (very) brief description of this in the introductory notes; teachers of MUSE/ASE should be aware that they will need to customize the advice accordingly. This is also true for the grammar sections, but to a much lesser extent.

Until the day they decide to issue an Americanized edition, there really is nothing comparable to Learner English. Highly recommended.

Adapting the ESL Teacher's Guide for the ESL Writer's Use

Typically, the second-language learner's first language tends to impose its grammatical patterns that interfere with learning the second language. This guide admirably elucidates numerous interference patterns in learning English as a Second Language (ESL)specific to twenty-two first languages.

However, as the book is intended for ESL teachers, it skips providing corrected English versions of the interfered sentences -- leaving that to the teacher. A simple way for adapting this teacher's guide for the ESL writer's use is to provide the corrected English version of each interference example. I provide hand-written corrections on the margin of this guide's copy of the relevant chapter and then ask them to revise their manuscript before sending for my editing. (Most of my ESL clients are post-doctoral scholars in fields such as comparative literature, psychology, social sciences, and creative writing.)

The guide comprises twenty-two chapters, each contributed by one or more expert ESL teachers whose first language is usually the same as the learner's. Each chapter is about sixteen pages, beginning with a page or two on phonology, followed by examples of interference patterns in punctuation and grammar. (For Indo-European languages, a list of false friends is added; for example German "bekommen," sounds like English "become," but means "obtain" or "get." Well, of course, tomorrow you will become a book.)

Samples of Dutch Interference Patterns in punctuation and grammar from the Guide (pages 1-20):
In Dutch, adverbs are identical with the uninflected form of the corresponding adjective. The use of unmarked adverbial forms is so deeply rooted in the Dutch speaker's competence that even advanced learners tend to make mistakes like:
*She drives very careful.
Correction to be provided: She drives very carefully.
Dutch has no indefinite article in a subject complement with a countable noun denoting a profession, occupation or status, a religion or a nationality.
*She is professor, Buddhist and Swede. *She's also widow.
Correction to be provided: She is a professor, Buddhist, and Swede. She's also a widow.

Samples of Interference Patterns of Scandinavian Languages in punctuation and grammar from the Guide (pages 21-36).
*The frontdoor is locked and the firealarm is on.
Corrections to be provided: The front door is locked and the fire-alarm is on.
*It/There was shot a man shot here yesterday.
Correction to be provided: A man was shot here yesterday.
*She spoke to me quite polite. ("Scandinavian adverbs of manner tend to be similar in form to adjectives, which lead to frequent mistakes.")

*I really must stop to smoke. ("The absence of the gerund in their own language tends to make Scandinavians use the infinitive.")

*The band plays now. (Scandinavian languages have no progressive verb forms.)

*I think, that there has been a mistake.

The auxiliary "do" has no equivalent in German; interrogatives are made by simple inversion. *When started you to play the piano?
Correction to be provided: When did you start playing the piano?

Samples of French Interference Patterns in grammar from the Guide (pages 58-59):
Negatives in French are formed by putting "ne . . . pas" around a one-word verb, or around the auxiliary of a longer verb. This tends to incorrect placement of "not" as follows.
*I have not said nothing.
Correction to be provided: I have said nothing.
French has no present progressive form. This tends to incorrect sentences such as:
Julie can't come to the phone now. *She has/takes a bath.
Correction to be provided: Julie . . . now. She is taking a bath.

Samples of Spanish and Catalan Interference Patterns in grammar from the Guide (pages 98-99): Word order is much freer than in English. This allows words that are emphasized to be placed last and tend to result in incorrect English sentences such as:
*Yesterday played very well the children.
Correction to be provided: Yesterday, the children played very well.
Object complements are regularly placed before a direct object resulting in a pattern such as:
*They took to the hospital her mother.
Correction to be provided: They took her (their) mother to the hospital.

Samples of Hindi Interference Patterns in punctuation and grammar from the Guide (pages 227-243).
Besides a simple past tense, Hindi also distinguishes the past habitual, past progressive and past perfect, though usage is not completely identical in Hindi and English. With the small group of common stative verbs including 'believe, hear, know, understand, want, which are rarely used in progressive forms, the English past progressive may be used inappropriately by analogy with the Hindi past habitual, formed with the present participle and past auxiliary:
*We were wanting to go to England.
Correction to be provided: We wanted to go to England.
Hindi does not make the same distinctions between intensifying adverbs as are drawn by the English 'more, very, and too':
*I like this music too much.
Correction to be provided: I like this music very much.

Streamlining Problem Areas in English - Culture by Culture

I think that this is an excellent resource - as it is focused on the needs of Learners from different countries and cultures. As a teacher of Business English, I find this to be an important tool to enhance the ability to do business in English. Here is its benefit: whatever mistakes a person is having in English, they can relate back to their culture's general relationship to English.
