Now this is fun!

This is one GORE-geous collection! It's been a while since I took a look at these pages, since the single issues came out a little while back, but I was still in love with the way things turned out. I think that the character designs are just flat out great, sure we got the typical comic book styled school cast, but who cares, it looks good! Add to that some great coloring work, nice lettering and you got yourself a winner. Of course who can forget those drop dead scenes of horror, where someone get offed. Overall a great looking book that is added on when add in the extras with the trade.

I am going to go a little lower on the story for one main reason, I thought the book bordered too much on the edge of good horror story vs. B-Style horror story. Now it's not a bad thing at all, I just found at moments it was too cheesy and then a little to serious. So my horrible negativity aside, I now have to say how much I loved this story overall. I found the dialogue to be great throughout, nothing seemed choppy or to out of place. The twist was killer too. Just good stuff all around.

So here is what I have to say to the creators, when can I expect more work from you guys? This book is great from the first page to the last. I love the artwork and am floored by the story. I don't know if I would say it really mixed the two movies, but I can see the certain similarities. Bottom line is this, if you want to read something fun, this is it. If you want to read something creepy, this is it. If you want to read something I will be reading time and time again, this is it. Fantastic stuff, now start writing some more!

Bad Kids Go To Hell (the Graphic Novel) is wholly predictable

Bad Kids Go to Hell is in its second printing, but I became aware of it at last week's Stan Lee's Comikaze Con, when I met the author Matthew Spradlin - who signed a new copy for me. The comic has been adapted as a horror film, so it has to have something going for it, but story is not a reason to pick this one up. Bad Kids go to Hell is sort of Poltergeist meets Breakfast Club written by a slasher movie fan. Six snotty kids are tossed into detention together and placed in a library knowingly built on an Indian burial ground. The guys who built the library went out of their way to steal the land from its Indian guardian. So, supernatural trouble follows. In flashback we learn why each of the kids was sent into this lockdown, and they continue to tell their tales of woe after one of them has been killed. Each of the characters is so overly aggressive and narrowly codified that it reads with such predictability as to be painful. The structure of the tale is sloppy, the pace grating, and the believability factor so near zero that it ruins any attempt to correlate or flow with logic. In other words, it will be a great, and typical, slasher film.
Another drag on the graphic novel is the shoddy construction of the book itself. I have pondered from time to time why it is that several great artistic works are so shoddily bound as to allow the pages to fall out? If you spent that much effort, time and money to create powerful full color image, spend the extra pennies to get a printer with a decent binder system. On this issue alone it is hard to ever recommend a book. You should never have to shell out $14.99 for a book that falls apart in your hands.
Gripes aside, the tome has a few things pulling for it. The foremost is an appeal to the set of comic buyers who want titillation over substance or story. The women in this book are all hot. They are drawn to sexy mythological standards, perfect bodies, and are wanting for the reader to see them. The book does not resort to nudity, but it might as well have. There is a series of ads in the back of the book about scantily dressed women, pitching "Girls and Corpses Magazine", "Nerd Girl Pinups" and a photo-spread of fans of the first print who appear to be hopefuls for the "going wild" videos. If that appeals to you, so will Bad Kids go to Hell. You don't even have to read it, just turn page and drool.
The biggest plus for the effort is the artwork. The realistic based endeavor really showcases the drawing talent of Anthony Vargas and Chris Allen. Details in faces are consistent, the texture of the setting is appealing, and the supernatural and bloody elements show a determined and successful use of the color palette. It may be the sole reason to pick up the comic.

Not very interesting

Bad Kids Go to Hell is equal parts The Breakfast Club, The House on Haunted Hill and The Grudge, all stripped of their cinematic splash and crammed into a lackluster graphic novel.
The problem is, the plot never really clicks, the two-dimensional characters never earn much sympathy and the story as a whole just trundles along in an effort to be something new ... which it's not.
You have a group of vastly diverse students locked in a library for Saturday detention as a school administrator and maintenance man tend to their own business elsewhere in the building. These kids never bond or anything, they just co-exist and occasionally clash. When the first one dies, you're mostly just relieved to have one less to keep track of.
