This book is the second remarkable effort by a very able author and historian toward capturing and recording the role of one of the major arms of service during the Vietnam War-the helicopter. His introductory chapter summarizes early helicopter employment in Korea, Indo-China, Malaya, Algeria, and Borneo, actions which are studied in detail by U.S. Army personnel who had the necessary vision to look to the future. It is of some interest to note that the story of "Vietnam choppers" actually commenced about two years prior to the studies by the Howze Board and the formation of the 11th Air Assault Division (Test) in February, 1963 which marked the birth of the "sky cavalry". The story began on 1 November 1961, when the 57th and 8th Transportation Companies (Light Helicopter) from Ft. Lewis, Washington and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina were alerted for deployment to an unknown destination. The destination was Vietnam and the author covers literally the full spectrum of operations from that first deployment of over a quarter century ago to the final, tragic, and pitiful agonies of the American effort in Vietnam. Dunstan's book is both technical and tactical in content. The major capabilities and limitations of each type of helicopter are addressed in detail and for the military or civilian reader who maybe interested in what was done, how, and where, methods of employment, tactics, and techniques are carefully described. We learn of the organization and evolution of the helicopter units of various types within the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps as well as their capabilities and limitations in action are well covered. The author offers an excellant treatise on the logistical role of the helicopter and his section on medical evacuation is superb. Perhaps the most unique aspect is contained in the combat after-action reports which the author has expertly woven into his account. One can't read the accounts of "Mad Man" Kelly, Gary Wetzel, or Chief Warrant Officer Novisel without a clear recognition of the incredible professionalism, sense of duty, and dedication of the thousands of helicopter crews who experienced Vietnam. The actions selected here were "above and beyond the call of duty", but are representative of all the crews who did their duty in the most frustrating and complex combat environment yet faced by the American military. Recognition must also be given to the more senior soldiers who broke the "helicopter trail". Here we remember those early pioneers Hamilton Howze, Robert Williams, Jay Vanderpool, Phil Seneff, Harry Kinnard, Jim Smith, Delk Oden, and Bob Shoemaker. These fine soldiers wee closely followed by those who were called "operators", refining and modifying the earlier pioneer work: men such as Archie Clapp, Bill Maddox, Kit Sinclair, Jim Patterson, Charlie Canedy, Bob Molinelli, Ben Harrison, and Doc Bahnsen. All these great personalities and many more too numerous to mention, had indirectly contributed to the work of this outstanding account, and their influence in the maturing of air mobility for ground combat forces as frequently shown throughout this text.

Another Great Collection!

Winner Takes All is another showcase of Christopher Pierce's immense story-telling talents. The focus of these stories is the Master/slave relationship, mostly told from the slave's point of view. Although this may not be everyone's scene, these stories really go beyond any single designation such as Master/slave. They are filled with interesting characters, descriptive settings, and, naturally, hot sex! Like all of his previously published stories, Pierce does not write simple one-dimensional porn. He draws his characters deeply and describes his settings precisely, all of which adds to the erotic nature of his writing. If you're not aroused while reading these stories, then something is wrong! One of my favorite stories was "Hard Day's Reward" in which the slave gets his own action as Master over another man (with his own Master's permission, naturally). In this story, Pierce clearly shows that the Master/slave relationship is not always so one-sided and that surprises abound here as in any relationship. The title story, "Winner Takes On" is really a five-part novella of a slave who is lost for the weekend to another Master after an arm wrestling contest. What occurs during that weekend changes all of their lives. Simply put, Pierce tells very real stories in this collection, filled with hot leather Masters and their sculpted boy slaves, incredibly hot sex, along with a good bit of bondage, discipline, and over-the-shoulder carries. But each story, while undeniably sensual, is also an amazing piece of erotic literature. What else could one ask for?

Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty

Having read four different editions, I'm merging the reviews to make comparison easier. The five star rating reflects the highest rating that any edition below has, but each version has gotten a different rating that is noted in parenthesis.

The basic story: After years of wishing for a child, the King and Queen finally have a girl who, other than Princess and later Sleeping Beauty, has no name. Fairies (the number varies) come to the celebration of her birth and bestow good things upon her, except for one fairy who wasn't invited (details vary). Her gift to the child is a promise that she will die when she is sixteen years old, after pricking her finger on a spindle. This terrible curse cannot be removed but one last fairy has a gift left to give and softens the curse so that the Princess will sleep until kissed by a Prince, rather than die. Her father's efforts to thwart the curse do no good and the curse comes true years later. The fairy who'd lightened the curse puts the rest of the castle's residents to sleep and grows a magical forest around it to protect them until the right Prince comes along. When he does, happiness and life are restored to the castle and the Prince and Princess marry.

This story is written by Lisa Findlay. Forget everything you've read in this review so far, because this book is not AT ALL what you're going to expect. Despite having the same name, and some of the same characters, this is not the Sleeping Beauty story you think it is. Three fairies live with Briar Rose, hiding her from Maleficent. They don't use magic because that would give them away, but when they set out to make a cake and a dress for Briar Rose for her sixteenth birthday, they discover that they really need their magic. They take a risk and give Briar Rose the happiest day of her life. The illustrations are typical Disney. It's a cute story, but it is simply NOT the Sleeping Beauty tale and it really shouldn't have been advertised as such because people will be terribly disappointed if they're not previously aware. I give it four stars for what it is, can't give it five because it feels deceptive.

ISBN 0394927982 Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty (Disney's Wonderful World of Reading) and ASIN B000WPNRK8 SLEEPING BEAUTY (5 stars) - Keep in mind that Disney's Wonderful World of Reading books are intended to help youngsters start reading on their own, because this book isn't meant for the advanced reader. The story is shortened and altered somewhat and the text is simplified using easy vocabulary words. The graphics are part of the story in these books, as well, making it easy for young readers to see what's happening as they learn to read. The entire set is standard Disney - bright, beautiful graphics to catch kids' eyes and pull them into the wonderful world of reading!

ISBN 0785300252 The Sleeping Beauty (Fairy Tale Treasury, Volume 1) (3 stars) -The one thing that makes Jane Jerrard's adaptation for the Fairy Tale Treasury series is the almost pocket-size, perfect for taking along when you're out of the house. The illustrations by Burgandy Nilles are nice and, considering how small they are, surprisingly detailed. They are generally much less vibrantly colored than the Disney illustrations. This version is all right, but just doesn't compare to the Disney edition.

ISBN 0736422528 Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty (4 stars) - I'm always a little wary of books that cut a 90 minute movie into less than a dozen pages. This one does an okay job, but not stellar. Maleficent put a spell on Princess Aurora that would cause her to fall into a deep sleep, not die, when she turned 16. Nothing would ever wake her again except a true love's kiss. Fortunately, Aurora has three good fairies looking out for her and, when the time comes, they send Prince Phillip to rescue her. They arm him with a sword and shield and he uses these to fight Maleficent, in the form of a dragon, before he is able to reach Aurora. This adaptation, by Mary Wilson, is not flawless. For one thing, it is so rushed that you get the feeling it might be the middle book of a three-book set. It's not, of course, it's just missing any slow paced lead-in and is wrapped up in seconds. The pace, however, feels much faster to an adult, who can read it in under 2 minutes, than it does when you take your time reading it to a child. The illustrations are standard Disney, though surprisingly dark overall. Weirdly, the yellow and white curls that appear to rise from Aurora's sleeping form make it look like she smells. That was a bit of an odd choice, but the rest are all good. The glossy board book pages wipe clean easily and are sturdy enough to take a bit of abuse.

This book recounts the Family History of the Thomsons of Wigtownshire Scotland. They were Presbyterian Succeeders who deviated from the orthodoxy of the Presbyterian church. Many suffered martyrdom and were tortured or killed. Others were driven out or fled, their fates remain unknown. Hugh Thomson II born 1775 married Anne Milwain born 1778. They had eight children. After Hugh Thomson II died of cancer in 1840, Anne Milwain along with all but one of her children and their families immigrated to America, the last group arriving in Illinois in 1856. She died in Biggsville Illinois in 1875 at age 96!! This book recounts the family histories of the more than five thousand direct descendants of Ann Milwain. Some of them changed the spelling of their names to the more commonly accepted spelling of Thompson. A majority of the descendants were girls and they married and took the names of their husbands. All of these family lines are traced in this book down to the present day. This book also recounts the family tradition that the maternal uncle of Ann Milwain was the Revolutionary War Hero John Paul Jones. With modern DNA testing, it now becomes possible to search for and locate the lost or missing branches of the large Thomson Family Tree.

About the Author
Donald C. Thomson was born in 1936 in Morning Sun, Iowa. He was active in the Boy Scouts and earned the Eagle Scout award in 1953. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1960 with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. He worked with a naval research facility in Annapolis Maryland until his retirement in 1962. Most of his career was involved with the reduction of sound levels of naval craft, especially petrol boats. After retirement, genealogy became his hobby resulting in the publication of this book. He has spent hundreds of hours in a volunteer effort indexing the results of the 1870 and 1880 census. He is married with four children.

A superb vocab list

This book is a great list for those students who wish to build their vocabulary in order to gain a greater understanding to the bible. This book is not a dictionary and don't try to use it as such. The words are broken into sections according to the frequency in which they occur in the bible. The more frequent a word occurs the closer to the front they will appear. The words are not in alphabetic order. However, if you wish to improve your vocabulary quickly by learning the most useful words than this book is for you.

Well Organized

The interesting thing about learning Biblical Hebrew is that there is a definite limit to how much vocabulary you need to learn (about 8700 words, and many are cognates of each other). This booklet arranges all words together by frequency, without having to switch between a verb and a noun section. This book gives the frequencies of each word so that you can basically calculate how much of the Hebrew Bible you will be able to read as you learn. Its one downfall is that it doesn't give accurate frequencies on words over 5000 occurrences--it just says 5000. Well, that's very inadequate considering that Vav/"V" (and) occurs 50,303 times, not only 5,000. For the definite article Heh (H), it states 5000, but the actual number is 30,393. It would not have been difficult to find these numbers and publish them in the book.

There are 474,365 morphemic occurrences in the Hebrew OT. By only learning to recognize the initial Vav, one has reduced the occurrences to learn to 424,062. By learning one letter/word out of 8700, one can recognize over 10% of the morphemic occurrences in the OT (this book indicates that one has learn 1.6%). Learn the first 25 words that are most frequent, and one has learned to recognize almost 43% (over 200,000) of all morphemic occurrences (assuming one learns a little about how these words change appearance in actual use). This text does not give completely accurate frequencies on the first 25 words. This shouldn't stop one from buying it. Just know that having learned the first 25, you're almost 43% there; and if you know all the attached and unattached pronouns, add over another 10% to your recognition bank.

I find it very easy to carry around, and I've added my notes to it. This has been my primary quick-learning guide.

A Great Tool For Hebrew Students

I was in the middle of taking a class in Elementary Hebrew. Part of the class requires learning vast amounts of vocabulary. I was struggling with learning the vocabulary as English has little roots to Hebrew. I found this little book in our library at school and it has helped to save my life! I just ordered it today to keep with me when I take Hebrew again in seminary! Thanks for the help Dr. Mitchel.
