My semi-negative opinion...
By Sherry Hagenson
I bought this novel on the basis of the extremely positive reviews; everyone seemed to love it, so I assumed I would, too. Not so much. First, I will say that I did appreciate Riddle's premise; the eventual point he was trying to make is something with which I completely agree. Also, the book is very well-edited and formatted; you won't be annoyed by poor spelling, grammar, etc. My problems with this novel centered around the characters; I never felt that they were anything but one-dimensional, simply there as placeholders for various points of view. The story started off quite well, with a plane crash and ensuing confusion, but soon became completely bogged down by its own weighted narrative. This is science fiction, after all, so I'm not speaking about the actual plot itself. I don't want to give away giant plot points, but I did feel that after some momentous reveals, the characters seemed far too blas; actual humans would have been seriously freaking out. I also had difficulties with the final chapters, which seemed rushed and simplistic, and curiously unfinished. There is the kernel of a good story here, but Riddle doesn't seem interested in delving into the intricacies of the situation he has created. Lack of finesse, very bad airship battle scenes and a general absence of thoughtful cohesiveness made Departure a somewhat frustrating read for me-which was surprising as this is the kind of thing I generally enjoy. I personally cannot recommend this book, but a great many people loved it, so I know mine is a minority viewpoint. As always, we pay our money, and we take our chances.

Plane crash survival sci-fi thriller
By Peggy F.
A plane crashes in the English countryside, breaking in two with its nose and first class section suspended in trees, and with its tail in a shallow lake nearby.
Most of the first class passengers survive the crash. The tail section passengers do not fare as well.
When the first class survivors find the tail section, they see it is slowly settling into the lake, so they embark on a daring rescue. They manage to rescue some of the passengers before the tail fills with water and sinks to the lake bottom.
At first the reader thinks this story is a plane crash survival tale, but that's just the beginning.
For the most part this is a fast paced science fiction thriller. The first 60% of the story held my rapt attention. But then the story slows down as the characters go on and on about their feelings.
The story has big ideas but some of the main characters' internal self-reflections are so trivial. It slowed down the story and did not fit. I lost interest in the main characters and then lost interest in the story.

Too many unreasonable character behaviors/reactions take you right out of the story
By S. Hungsberg
I had to stop about 40% of the way through the audio version of A.G. Riddle's "Departure" as I became incredibly frustrated. I loved the premise of the story and wanted to know what happens, but it was the execution of it that made me drop it and move on to the next book.
Without spoiling anything for folks who haven't read it, I've found two major flaws with how this is written. First is that even though you know the gist of what's going to happen based upon the book's description, that primary plot doesn't kick in until a fourth of the book has gone by. So that first 25% of the story feels like major filler. You find yourself wondering why Riddle even bothered with this part at all. There were character traits established that could have been accomplished in a fifth of the space.
Second, the characters are frequently reacting in unreasonable ways to what's happening around them. Since I don't want to give anything away, I'll describe it like this: it's as if one of the characters was walking down the road in a major city and a huge pink elephant started running the same street. In Riddle's style, the character would say something like, "That's a pink elephant isn't it? Strange. Now how am I going to find that library I was looking for?" Nothing about why the pink elephant suddenly showed up out of nowhere. Nothing about why the elephant was pink. Nothing about the character reacting to or wondering about this strangeness at all. In fact, in the midst of all of the craziness, one of the characters winds up focusing on suddenly-no-longer-relevant issues like what she wants to do with her career.
There are *so* many examples of this that they took me right out of the story.
