This volume represents the first real attempt to teach Sicilian using the current thinking about how languages are learned. It is designed to empower the student to communicate his thoughts in Sicilian to native speakers. It provides not only the linguistic tools that are needed to communicate, but also the cultural information essential to communication. It consists of 18 chapters plus a preliminary lesson. Each chapter presents grammatical points that are integrated with useful exercises that make sure that the students not only understand the rules but are able to manipulate the language in creative ways. Each chapter contains dialogues, often humorous, readings and other linguistic material that present a comprehensive picture of the culture of Sicily. About the Author
Professor Gaetano Cipolla is Professor Emeritus from St. John's University. He is regarded as the leading scholar for Sicilian language and culture in the US. He is president and editor of Arba Sicula, and he is the principal editor of Legas in New York. He has written extensively on Sicilian culture. His Siciliana: Studies on the Sicilian Ethos, contains some of his most important essays. He is also the leading translator of Sicilian poetry into English, with more than a dozen volume to his credit.

Great book!!

This is the first really well organized sicilian language textbook i've seen. i looked through the first couple chapters and im impressed. if you have jk bonner's sicilian grammar book this is much different and more appealing i think. its organized much like other language text i've seen for spanish or french. of course im a little partial to my own parrati but the one used is good. i think the author was really compelled to pick one and stick with it in order to not make the work too confusing... anyways great book so far! grazzii Gaetano Cipolla!!

Truly excellent and innovative

I am very impressed with the way this book is organized. Over all, an incredibly thorough presentation of Sicilian. I wish other language texts followed the pacing and format of this one. The author strikes an innovative balance that most miss: starts basic but progresses quickly while providing enough vocab translation and grammar explanation; has a great balance of text, photos and space so it's not as stuffy as some overly text-heavy books; nor does it spend toooo much time on cheesy illustrations or too much preschool-type vocabulary as many others do (the dog is big. the cat is little, etc.). Glossy pages and color photos make it very readable and engaging, and the intermediate and very advanced texts in the mid and later portion of the book represent a very diverse selection-poetry, historical, geographical, etc. The exercises are useful w/o being too repetitive, and the CD-though a bit tiresome at times simply b/c it includes recitations of so many exercises and answers-is very helpful. Highly highly recommended.

Eager to learn!

This is the best book I have ever found on learning Sicilian! My father didn't speak Sicilian too much at home because he wanted us to assimilate and because my mother is from England. But this takes me back to my other half's roots to my remaining family there.
