About the Author
Michael Freeman, professional photographer and best-selling author, was born in England in 1945, took a Masters in Geography at Brasenose College, Oxford University, and then worked in advertising in London for six years. In 1971 he made the life-changing decision to travel up the Amazon with two secondhand cameras, and when Time-Life used many of the pictures he came back with, he embarked on a full-time photographic career. Since then, working for clients that include all the world's major magazines, most notably the Smithsonian Magazine (for which he has shot more than 40 stories over 30 years), Freeman's reputation as one of the world's leading reportage photographers has been consolidated. Of his many books, which have sold over 4 million copies worldwide, more than 60 titles are on the practice of photography. For this photographic educational work he was awarded the Prix Louis Philippe Clerc by the French Ministry of Culture. Freeman's books on photography have been translated into 27 languages.

A caveat: don't think that this is a pocket 'How To' guide. Actually, I'm not sure at what group this is aimed. It's not an easy what to do hints and tips book but equally, it isn't something for the serious amateur or professional. It might be for those who are more familiar with their camera and want to take the next step. There are some decent sections on white balance, noise, dynamic range, memory cards, flash units and tripods amongst others. The two pages on travelling with your equipment made for scary reading when it gave a box of 23 items, including five different lenses to take with you. We aren't all professionals.
Whilst this is easy to fit in a pocket, there isn't anything here that you would really need to refer to when you're 'in the field'; it's more 'technical', so to speak, and might be something to be dipped into when at home, which is why I'm unsure as to what the target audience is for this.
I'm not one for using Photoshop or Lightroom or any other manipulation software and whilst I realise it's now an inherent part of photography, it still annoys me when guides devote an overly large amount of space to such a thing instead of explaining to the user how to get it right in-camera. And as this is supposed to be a carry-it-with-you type book, how many people are going to fire up Photoshop, etc. whilst out and about? This has 60 pages of post processing advice. I skipped past them.
