Long Overdue

Just as the reader above me commented this book is long overdue.

I've been close to a die-hard Battletech novel reader and I've never played the table top game ever. I think the universe is amazing and I've even gone so far as to buy the most recent Technical Readout that just came out. (Again, long overdue!) It's a great universe to read and it's a shame that some of the original books can't be found on Kindle!! (Catalyst re-release them on Kindle!) I really urge anyone to try reading some of these books. This one among most!

The writing was fantastic. It's one of the rare books that took place during the Jihad and it was fantastic. I've been dying to read more stories that took place in the Jihad so I'm grateful it's been able to deliver. The action was great and intense. There was a decent balance on strategic fights but lent more to battles which I'm all for.

I would have to say the end was a bit an annoying cliffhanger. I'm not sure if it was done because it had to flow into the tabletop storyline.

Thank you for finally releasing a full length book.

Excellent Read

It's been a long time since we have had a battletech eBook that was the equivalent length of a feature novel and this novel does not disappoint.

Isle of the Blessed depicts the defense of New Avalon against the Word of Blake during the Jihad. This reminds me of a futuristic David vs Goliath story. Jackson Davion and the Federated Suns defenders have the deck stacked against them but they continue to fight and frustrate the Word of Blake invaders. On the other hand, the Word of Blake has all the advantages and cannot seem to pin the Davion Defenders in place and destroy them. It's the ultimate game of cat and mouse. The fate of New Avalon rests on the edge of a knife.

Overall I would highly recommend this eBook. It's an exciting fast paced read.

The Fight for New Avalon

Well written Battletech story that reminds me of some of my favorite fiction from the FASA days. I have always gravitated to the Federated Suns when I play the tabletop game, so I was pleased that this story was centered on New Avalon.
I would have given 5 stars, but the ending felt a bit too abrupt. Hopefully there will be further books to continue the stories of these characters.

Content is ok. Layout is terrible

I've only just started reading this. Its a rather odd format. There are short introductions, followed by a series of questions and worked out answers. Its ok, I guess, if not a bit unusual.

I really don't like the layout. There are no margins! This makes it uncomfortable to read. Your eyes just fall off the side of the page. There is at most one character width margin. More importantly, there is nowhere to make any notes. I like to scribble notes on technical books to help me learn / remember the material. I Can't do that with this book. I can only guess that the author/publisher was too cheap to use white space.

I give this book an F- on layout. If really needs to be in a larger format with margins.

About the Author

HIROSHI OZAWA is an associate professor at the Science University of Tokyo and Kendo kyoshi, 7th dan. He was born in Saitama prefecture in 1950 into a highly respected Kendo family which was instrumental in incorporating Kendo into the physical education curriculum as a core subject. He makes regular trips abroad to demonstrate and teach Kendo, and also writes books about samurai ethics.

Very good

I own both the Complete Kendo book and the Heart of Kendo book.
This book is by far better than the other 2 as far as providing technical information.

Pros:
- The pictures are much better drawn (at least when compared to the other 2 books). Still in some cases a photo would have been more useful.
- The section on kata is presented as numbered steps in 2 columns, one for uchidachi and the other for shidachi. This makes it much easier to understand.
- Many of the movements are described as numbered lists. The other 2 books I looked at just write long paragraphs of text making it very difficult to decipher, even after you've learned the movement in class.
- Goes thru a complete treatment on how to put on the equipment.
- Extensive coverage of waza.

Cons:
- The information in the book is not ordered in the same order as you would learn things in a Kendo class so you will need to hop around chapters.
- Sadly there is no index in this book either. I don't quite understand why in this day and age books don't have indices. All 3 Kendo books I own do not have them.
- The descriptions are rather brief so it reads more like a manual than a book.
- The sections on suburi describe that you should swing "big". So in most of the diagrams the shinai is shown drawn all the way behind and almost touching the person's back (even in shomen suburi). What the book does not say though is that this is intended initially to train beginners to swing big. But when you actually perform a strike you generally aren't supposed to swing that far behind your back. But I am nitpicking...
- Book does not cover equipment maintenance.
- There is some use of terms that are not defined in the book.
- Book does not explain how to put himos onto men.

I would recommend getting this book in addition to one of the other 2 books to fill in some missing gaps. However even after owning all 3 books I find none of them cover the full body of knowledge that a beginner encounters. So these books are no substitute for a real class (obviously).

More than just technique...

The path of the sword is not taken lightly. It involves practice, improvment and confidence in the technique. This book is a good way to get you started. It covers basic techniques, ettiquette, terms and some very good advice. I would recommend this book along with "Iai, the art of drawing the sword" by Darrel Craig as these books compliment each other very well.

Higly Recommended for Beginners.

As a beginner in Kendo this book has definately been helpful. Because the Japanese terms (or words) are used throughout the book it has helped me retain them (I couldn't seem to remember them when learned in the Dojo). It's filled with illustrations, however, I don't think any pictures could illustrate the moves enough. These illustrations combined with what you learn in the Dojo (or on video) should be sufficient, they are definately better than most. In the appendix is good information (and rules) on official Kendo tournaments. I'd say it's a must-have book for anyone new to the sport.
Topics that I would have liked to see, but does not include: There is nothing on the care and maintenance of the Bogu or Shinai, or how to select the proper equipment. There is nothing on testing and advancement (Kyu to Dan), although perhaps this varies from Dojo to Dojo anyway. I would have liked to see a chapter on Iaido as well (however, this is because Iaido is an essential part of our Dojo's Kendo training, this may not be the case with all Dojos).
Overall a great book. If you're looking for a book on Kendo and don't have this one, get it, you won't be sorry.

This book is the culmination of the philosophy of Dr. Shewhart . Dr. Shewhart was virtually unknown till he delivered a series of lectures which were then edited and converted into this book by W. Edwards Deming . Dr. Deming recognised the importance of these lectures and felt that this would be the best way to popularise Shewhart's works . Shewhart's earlier book " Economic Control of Quality in Manufactured Product " was the second recorded book on Quality ( 1931 ) . His concepts of the " old Way " and " New Way " of doing businesses are relevant even today . Shewhart touched on topics which Management gurus refer to even today . This book first introduced the " Scientific Method of Improvement " which we now know as the Shewhart - Deming PDSA cycle for improvement . All in all a timeless piece of writing and a must for every Quality / Management fanatic.

This may be the most inaccesible management book I've ever read. I picked it because of Shewart's exalted position in the quality movement - as the mentor and intellectual guide to Deming, he is the theorist behind the quality of our cars, VCRs and televisions.
Unfortunately, his writing is enormously hard to read and apply. The mathematics were very hard to penetrate - dozens of pages to even get to basing control charts on standard deviations. I've got a minor in mathematics, so I was suprised by the difficulty. It was near impossible to derive quality lessons from the book.
In deference to the author, I'll make a lot of excuses for him:
- It was written a long time ago.
- The book was aimed at statisticians, not managers.
- A compilation of Shewart's ideas would be more effective than lecture notes.
My end recommendation - browse before you buy.

Genius can be hard work

A Classic of its time, many managers today are not aware of the genius of Shewhart. In fact Deming himself attributes most of his ideas to Shewhart. There are many Management Gurus today who pay scant regard to the contributions of Shewhart and pass off their work as original but on closer examination you will find the mind of Shewhart once you remove the modern spin.

Excellent method and logical thinking. Its worth persisting with the old fashioned language to get the true voice of the genius.

Its about time this man received the recognition he deserves.

Yet over the past three decades the ideological triumph of neoliberalism has caused the allocation of spatial, political, economic, and financial resources to favor economic growth at the expense of wider social benefits. Susan Fainstein's concept of the "just city" encourages planners and policymakers to embrace a different approach to urban development. Her objective is to combine progressive city planners' earlier focus on equity and material well-being with considerations of diversity and participation so as to foster a better quality of urban life within the context of a global capitalist political economy.

Fainstein applies theoretical concepts about justice developed by contemporary philosophers to the concrete problems faced by urban planners and policymakers and argues that, despite structural obstacles, meaningful reform can be achieved at the local level. In the first half of The Just City, Fainstein draws on the work of John Rawls, Martha Nussbaum, Iris Marion Young, Nancy Fraser, and others to develop an approach to justice relevant to twenty-first-century cities, one that incorporates three central concepts: diversity, democracy, and equity. In the book's second half, Fainstein tests her ideas through case studies of New York, London, and Amsterdam by evaluating their postwar programs for housing and development in relation to the three norms. She concludes by identifying a set of specific criteria for urban planners and policymakers to consider when developing programs to assure greater justice in both the process of their formulation and their effects.

"Susan Fainstein's book is the result of some 20 years of intense research and thinking on the subject of the 'just city,' and it seems likely to me to become something of a classic. . . . Fainstein's slightly deadpan style serves only to make her accounts more compelling. A recent history of planning in London, written with equality, democracy and diversity in mind, is really useful as a teaching tool. Here the Docklands development, Coin Street and the 2012 Olympics are placed under scrutiny, with the last of those three, perhaps not surprisingly, receiving poor marks on the grounds of equity not least because the 'huge expenditure involved took away resources from other parts of London and the country more widely without providing them any benefits beyond the glory of hosting the Games.' . . . She notes that there are two possible responses to the injustices illustrated by the book. One of the best books I've read on urban planning!

She really dives into the subject of justice and equity. This is a subject that's often talked about in the urban planning world of Portland, OR, but seldom do people really know what it means. This book was extremely clarifying and written in a way that is easy to understand and not written like a doctoral thesis. She starts with a philosophical discussion about what defines justice and, then, comes up with three criteria: democracy, equity, and diversity. In the three middle chapters she uses the examples of New York City, London, and Amsterdam as examples and analyzes each on the grounds of justice. She finishes the book with simple guidelines for planning a just city. Fantastic book!

The owner and creator of Middle School Novel Units is a middle school language arts teacher who was born to teach! My love of learning and my dream to teach began in 1971 on my first day of kindergarten. I grew up “playing school” every weekend in my grandma’s basement. My desire to teach never wavered through the years and finally became a reality with encouragement of my husband to attend college during the years that I stayed at home raising our 4 children. I graduated from the University of South Florida in 2005 and have been happily teaching ever since. Through teaching, I discovered a love of writing curriculum. I wrote my first complete novel unit in 2008. Middle School Novel Units Inc. has been in business since June of 2011. In 1957, Melba Pattillo turned sixteen. That was also the year she became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, Melba was one of nine teenagers chosen to integrate Little Rock's Central High School.

Throughout her harrowing ordeal, Melba was taunted by her schoolmates and their parents, threatened by a lynch mob's rope, attacked with lighted sticks of dynamite, and injured by acid sprayed in her eyes. But through it all, she acted with dignity and courage, and refused to back down.

This is her remarkable story.

Caution: Abridged Version

It is quite disappointing to me that Amazon says it NOWHERE on the product page, nor does it say so on the cover of the book, but this is an abridged version. The only mention of its abridgement occurs on the title page. Nearly a hundred pages have been cut out of this version. I purchased this book for a class and missed a lot of the references that were given in discussion.

It's a good read, but go for the full version.

DON'T GET THIS VERSION IF YOU NEED IT FOR A SCHOOL PROJECT!!!!!

THIS IS AN ABRIDGED VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOWHERE on the item description does it tell that this is such, but if you need the whole story, say for a school project, like I did, do not, I repeat, DO NOT order this version!!! I got it for my son's summer reading assignment and not until his first week of class did he find out that it was the abridged version of the book!!! He failed EVERY test on it because there was a LOT of information he didn't get from this. If you need the whole memoir, get the version with an artist's depiction of Ms. Beals when she was fifteen in front of a brick wall with the shadows of the 101st Airborne on the bottom half of the cover. It should be an option on the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section. DO NOT GET THIS VERSION IF YOU KNOW YOU NEED THE FULL, UNABRIDGED VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise, it is a very good abridgment. Read it to your heart's content, but know that there are about a hundred pages from the full memoir that are missing.

Warriors Don't Cry

The book was excellent. It was well written, the author created a sense that you were right there with her integrating the school. Every time one of the white children spit at her, kicked her, tried to set her on fire or push her down the stairs I was on the edge of my seat rooting for her. Her relationship with Danny the 101st Airborne Ranger who was her bodyguard was very moving, and how she used prayer to moniter her self talk and constantly regain composure and the initiative against her adversarys. This is a must read for anyone who has ever been violently treated as an outsider, a must read for youth struggling with identity and purpose, older people who lived through the era and middle aged people who are struggling with the direction of society.
I was moved by Melba's courage, her passion, her abilty to put her life on hold as a sixteen year old girl coming into her womanhood, for the struggle of her people. Todays youth face a hard road of war and poverty. The financial freedoms that we knew as Americans are fastly fading away. Like Melbas generation the youth face war, racism and an uncertain future. This book hopefully will inspire the next generations of Melbas. In the coming years ahead the youth will face new unprecedented challenges and our society will need warriors like Melba Beal to stand up and say no this is wrong no matter what the consequences.
