This book is one of the wittiest, yet still serious books for the spiritual pilgrim. It operates on at least two levels. First, the humor is nonstop. Wes Nisker is a master of one liners and small puns. Second, if one reads with a bit more intentionality and stops to make connections with the figures and wisdom traditions represented here, there is some sacred depth to be plumbed as well: laughter IS theology in some circumstances. I highly recommend the book. I first stumbled across this gem many moons ago in its original incarnation. This latest version still meets a high standard.

Okay,I took that title from Gary Snyder's blurb on the back cover, but its apt.The author also refers to it as a kind of survival guide for our troubled times.In it, he blends quotes by everyone from The Buddha to Groucho Marx, Lily Tomlin to Gandhi,Kafka to William Burroughs and William Blake, "crazy" visionaries with wise and humorous perspective and ties them together in a fun and insightful way.This is a new edition of his original Crazy Wisdom which at the time I purchased several copies of and handed out to friends.Therapeutic fun

Unique exploration of one of most important cultural realities of the 21st century

I'll be frank. I've not been a big fan of Junger's previous books, but in this book he puts his finger on one of the most important cultural realities of the twenty-first century, the loss of tight-knit communities. Certainly, Robert Putnam (in his important book BOWLING ALONE) and others have documented similar realities, but Junger's work stands out for two reasons: 1) it is immensely accessible and 2) he arrives at this conclusion from a unique perspective, that of his observation of the military experience. One of his central themes is the idea that soldiers in combat situations have such an intense experience of interdependency, solidarity and community that they often struggle upon returning to civilian life in the US, in which there rarely is any similar sort of community to which they can belong.

TRIBE is well-worth reading for pointed socio-political questions it asks about American civic life and for the keen observations it makes about the combat experience. Thankfully, Junger doesn't offer any easy fixes, but on the other hand, he doesn't do much to stir our imaginations about how to cultivate in American civilian life the sort of solidarity that combat engenders. At times, he does tend toward idealizing the Native American experience of tribal life, and that sort of idealism won't be particularly helpful for addressing the dissolution of community that we so intensely experience. Regardless, this is a timely book that should not only widely read, but also widely discussed.

We're All Dead Inside

Upon reading Junger’s article in a recent Vanity Fair article on the affects of PTSD (it’s not exclusive to just war veterans, by the way), I was under the assumption that a large portion of this book would be dedicated to that. I was wrong. Sebastian dove much deeper than that.

Tribe focuses on the growing disconnect we’re experiencing with one another as a society, and the far reaching consequences of that disconnect. It’s an eye-opening letter to the American public that politely reminds us that we’ve lost our way when it comes to being a closer knit community as a whole.

Not always, of course. In his book, he touches on how tragedies such as 9/11 brings us closer - albeit briefly. But once the dust settles, we fall back to our old ways.

This is not a book about war, the military, or PTSD. It’s about the loss of belonging, caring for our fellow man as we do about the ones closest to us. He uses a parable about a brief encounter he has with a homeless man as a young adult. The man sees that he’s on a backpacking trip on his own and asks if he has enough food for his trip. The young Junger, afraid of being mugged for his supplies, lies and tells the man that he has just a little food to last him. The homeless man tells Junger he’ll never make it on what he has and hands him his lunch bag that he more than likely received from a homeless shelter - probably the only meal the homeless man would have the entire day. Sebastian feels horrible about himself after that, but uses that lesson as a parable for Tribe.

Think of your fellow man before thinking of yourself. Because without that sense of humanism, togetherness, belonging, we’re all dead inside.

Sebastian Junger’s central theme is the epidemic of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) suffered by returning American war fighters that is exponentially higher than any previous conflict in world history.

The root cause, according to Sebastian Junger, is not war, violence, death and destruction overseas. It is not the VA back home. It is us.

Junger opens with a brilliant narrative—footnote free and wonderfully informative—of how primitive tribes, societies and communes through history waged wars and successfully dealt with the aftermath.

Then he cuts to the chase. A quick sampling:

“The vast majority of traumatized vets are not faking their symptoms, however. They return from wars that are safer than those their fathers and grandfathers fought, and yet far greater numbers of them wind up alienated and depressed. This is true even for people who didn’t experience combat. In other words, the problem doesn’t seem to be the trauma on the battlefield so much as reentry into society.”

“Todays veterans often come home to find that although they’re willing to die for their country, they’re not sure how to live for it. It’s hard to know how to live for a country that regularly tears itself apart along every possible ethnic and demographic boundary. The income gap between rich and poor continues to widen, many people live in racially segregated communities, the elderly are mostly sequestered from public life, and rampage shootings happen so regularly that they only remain in the news cycle for a day or two. To make matters worse, politicians occasionally accuse rivals of deliberately trying to harm their own country—a charge so destructive to group unity that most past societies would probably have just punished it as a form of treason. It’s complete madness, and the veterans know this.”

Consider the Paper and the Quality of Shipping Before Ordering

My book arrived damaged, which was disappointing. It was in a plastic bag and the cover and some of the pages were quite damaged, both inside and out. I have frequently ordered books from overseas and haven't ever had a problem before. The pictures are very pretty and I love that there is a colored picture to guide my learning to color flowers. However, and to me, most importantly, the paper is horrible. It is markedly thinner than a Creative Haven Coloring book, and I think even thinner than a regular Dover book. If you print your pics on to nicer paper, you won't mind, but I like to color in the book. I have the exotic flower book coming from a different seller and I'll be interested how they ship it and in what condition it arrives. I'm sorry to say that when I add the damaged condition and the horrible paper, I can only give it 2 stars.

What makes this coloring book different are the colored pictures in the book that are there for you to try your professional hand at matching and shading the same colors! I bought a professional 120 Blick colored pencil set and now I have a chance to prove my skills! Great buy would definitely buy another book from Kew!

My second Kew book

This is my second Kew Gardens book. I'm a high-intermediate colorist and I love coloring flowers. I also have the Kew Gardens Exotic Plants Coloring Book which is more challenging the this one but this book let's me do a picture faster because it's a bit simpler. I wish the paper was a little better, but it isn't bad either. All in all, I'm pleased with these books

Sandra Vasoli’s book is a refreshing and exciting new look at the letter famously written by Anne Boleyn on the 6th of May 1536, from her rooms in the Tower of London. Throughout the centuries there has been a great deal of debate as to whether or not this eloquent letter was actually written by Anne Boleyn. Some historians suggest that it was not while others say it was must belong to Anne as it reflects her famous style and wit.

Vasoli had the great honour of examining the original letter and was able to put together an extremely plausible timeline of the whereabouts of this famous letter from the time that it was written until the present day. She examines not only the letter but also the letters of her gaoler Sir Kingston as well as other historical documents and people which may have handled or known the whereabouts of the letter. She then compiles an extremely strong argument, based on detailed evidence and research, as to why this letter was indeed composed by Anne Boleyn.
Sandra also offers up a tantalizing piece of evidence which may shed new light upon Henry VIII’s personal thoughts and feelings towards the downfall and execution of his second wife.

This is a brilliant book which thoroughly examines all the evidence to provide a very compelling case that in fact the letter written on the 6th of May 1536 was indeed composed by Anne Boleyn. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Anne Boleyn or Tudor history.

A Good Assessment

For years, scholars have debated as to whether the letter supposedly written from the Tower by Anne Boleyn to Henry VIII is real or a forgery written during the reign of their daughter Elizabeth I. In her book, Sandra Vasoli traces the torturous path the letter took after Anne's execution. Although there is no absolute proof, by tracing the connections the letter had to important historical figures, and the connections they had throughout history, compelling proof is put forward that this elegant letter was in fact written by Anne Boleyn but kept from the King by Thomas Cromwell.

Sandra Vasoli has written a scholarly & carefully researched work regarding the provenance of the enigmatic "last letter" believed to be dictated
by Queen Anne. The compact book rekindled my interest in all things Anne Boleyn. I thought over & over, while reading, that if young woman were exposed to historical events by an author like Vasoli, they might have more of an interest in learning from the past. Looking forward to reading "Je Anne," next.
